Yoshi – My response to Scott Watters on Herald Sun’s Sacked Podcast

On Wednesday’s evening, I was on social media rather than running and kicking the footy because of a thunderstorm and hail. A Fox Footy article shared by a St Kilda fan’s Facebook page got my attention.

Former St Kilda coach Scott Watters revealed the list of issues at the footy club on the Herald Sun’s Sacked Podcast. Then the club champion Nick Dal Santo’s response followed.

My first curiousness was why Watters revealed such details now? Why didn’t he discuss them with the then list manager? Then reading the article, I started wondering why Watters landed at St Kilda if he had been warned by Collingwood list manager Derek Hine?

His successor Ross Lyon didn’t play kids while he was in charge. Young players had to seek opportunities at other clubs. Then salary cap issues occurred at the club. Lyon should have blooded kids and such issues should never have happened.

Then as Watters had been inexperienced, why did he apply for the senior coaching job? It’s unfair he complains about the club now! Simply, Watters should have asked the administration to fix the list issues, as I have already mentioned here. If fixed, we didn’t need to release Brendon Goddard, Dal Santo or Ben McEvoy. And Watters shouldn’t have discussed with BJ or Dal about their future. They wanted to stay St Kilda, as well as did McEvoy.

Watters and Pelchen ruined their life and career. I feel sorry for three players who had to play elsewhere. The former coach pointed out the bad culture, and Dal Santo was against.

Hearing a schoolgirl scandal put me away from supporting the Saints at the time, I admit. But the New Zealand adventure brought me to the loyal Saints supporting community. For this issue, I agree with Dal Santo. As he says, Nick Riewoldt and Lenny Hayes led the club on and off the field. They were good leaders.

As a passionate St Kilda supporter, I am sad to hear what Watters says. The media wants to reveal hidden stories, but they should know how Watters was sacked – because he appeared on SEN without the club’s approval. (I still remember what he said as I was listening to Morning Glory live). The podcast is nothing but negative. I want more positive stories.

I have to admit that the Herald Sun is a negative newspaper. I much prefer the Age!

About Yoshihiro Imagawa

Love, passion and pride are seen on the footy that is the biggest part of my life. 1. St Kilda Club member: I am a passionate and crazy Sainter. Just hope we will win the second flag soon, especially after Dogs and Tigers having ended long premiership draughts. 2. The Osaka Dingoes Player and Public Relations Officer: Player number 44 that I chose to honour Stephen Milne with my wish being like a small forward like him. Lenny Hayes' hardworking attitudes are adopted on my trainings and practices. Nick Riewoldt's great plays are in my player audiobook too. 3. Writing: Here on the Almanac and also on the World Footy News. My skills utilise on great footy websites.

  1. Sorry Yoshi but the saints have a serious culture problem that they need to rectify (and I speak as an Adelaide supporter so I can spot a club with a poor culture cos we’ve got one too, Collective Minds anyone?)

Watters had to release some players because the club was effectively in administration, and the AFL had stopped them from paying any more for any player. So when Zac Dawson, one of their only key defenders, wanted a $35,000 pay raise, they were hamstrung because they were unable to pay one cent more.

Plus there was the mad Monday celebrations where Leigh Montagna set fire to a dwarf who’d been hired to entertain the players. Seriously, who does that and then complains when the media reports it negatively?

He was also right about the move away from Moorabbin to Seaford, it was a stupid decision, Moorabbin us the saints’ spiritual home and a place that the supporters can gather around and watch the players, but also, it houses the history of the club.

I think Dal Santo Realise saying this more to cover his own failings as a leader during this era, rather than really addressing any of the real issues.

  2. Yoshi, all clubs have hidden stories. Over in SA both Port and Adelaide have their fair share. This coming weekend, the Sainters have a golden opportunity with the Crows in complete disarray.

As a Crows fan I can’t believe the dopey team selections and the same old not working game plan we see game after game.

Instead of watching and becoming so exasperated with the rubbish dished up, Mrs Fisho has challenged me to a series of noughts and crosses games to keep me from blowing my top.

  3. G’day Steve and Fisho,

    Thanks for your comments!

Steve – Releasing BJ, Dal and McEvoy happened due to Lyon’s mess but I think it was not Watters’ job. It should be list manager or football manager’s job. Or the coach had the right to select the team?? Thanks for reminding me about the move to Seaford. I forgot to mention in the article. It was the worst move. I have been there once and training there everyday is not good at all. Players were not happy indeed… It affected a lot to the club negatively unfortunately…

Fisho – Bad team selection and game plans are painful. I am not familiar with your Crows, so can you please tell me what is going on at Crows?

    Cheers

    Yoshi

  4. Yoshi, I really don’t know for sure but i believe the other coaches worked the Crows’ game plan and hav countered it. However Coach Pike hasn’t modified it significantly. Also many players have either lost confidence or are way out of form. At least half a dozen should retire at the end of the season – especially Bryce Gibbs.

As I type this its half time at the big match and I am so frustrated at the ridiculous errors the Crows are making but full marks to the Sainters. I wish I had taken up the good wife’s offer of a bout of noughts and crosses.

In closing I wouldn’t class Adelaide as hopeless – they’d need to improve greatly to be classed as hopeless.

  5. Well Yoshi, the Crows were able to improve in the second half (they couldn’t have gotten much worse). Stupid turnovers were rife especially in the second quarter. Whilst still unimpressed in the third and final terms they eliminated much of their stupidity.

On the other hand, I was impressed with much of the Saints play. They certainly pressured the Crows and some of their transitional play down the ground was quite superb (I believe in giving credit where credit is due) Also I was impressed with your lads clearance work, especially at the centre bounces.

Should the Saints persist with their current style I think their future is looking bright. Stick with them Yoshi (I know you will) PS have you researched my late cousin Travis Payze’s career (cancer got him) with the Saints?
