Women’s Footy: Angela Pippos and “A League of their Own”

Almanacker Bring Back the Torp has alerted us to a national TV documentary on the recent growth of female footy. Channel 7  has scheduled it directly after the Collingwood v Carlton game telecast, at approximately 9.45pm on Friday (Feb 3) night.  It is researched and narrated by journalist (and occasional Almanac contributor) Angela Pippos, and titled “A League Of Her Own”.  Angela will be telling us the story of three rising stars of the AFL Women’s League, including Collingwood’s Moana Hope.

Amongst other issues, it will examine the legal action taken by three angry 12 year olds and their parents against Football Victoria.  The result of this forced Football Victoria to start an all girl/female football competition for teenage girls.

There will also be brief footage on an Under 12 Girls GF in 2016 along with analysis of why girls and their families are so keen on girls’ football.

So if you are heading to the match, don’t forget to record it. Will be worth a squizz.

While some of us will be at the historic launch of the AFL Women’s League, many more will watch this amazing event unfold in the comfort of their homes.  (Or recording to watch the replay later.) The game is covered on Channel 7 and on radio.  (Don’t forget to bring your transistor radios to the game.) Saturday nights game of Western Bulldogs v Fremantle will be free to air Channel 7 on Saturday night.  The other games are covered by Foxtel.

And watch out for our Almanac match reports which will be posted as they come in. We have a squad of keen writers. Feel free to write something yourself – and you’re always welcome to email me [email protected]
