Who Killed David Hookes?

‘Not I,’ said the beach hotel.

‘David Hookes was raising hell.’

‘Not me,’ said the jug of grog.

‘Hookesy acted like a flog.’

‘Not us,’ said the raucous crowd.

‘Hookesy’s voice was twice as loud.’

‘Not I,’ said the hand that hit.

‘I dealt with Hookes as I saw fit.’

  1. Sad but true. When you live on the edge you sometimes fall over it. I am constantly bemused that only “top blokes” ever die. Millane etc etc. I know there is a time and a place, but obituaries are mostly hagiography. How do we learn (as individuals and a community) if we don’t acknowledge our failings.

  2. You cover a lot of ground in eight lines, Damian. Mark of a poet. High mark of a poet.
And Peter B, you make salient points.
A long, long time ago I wrote a piece called ‘Who hit Gavin Brown?’ After a certain Grand Final.

  3. That’s good Damian.
Why and what’s the reason for?

  4. PB, it was a senseless death in every way.    Vin, would love to see that poem re Gavin Brown.  Good get Les – Dylan was employing a classic template in that song.
