WAFL – Round 7: Sharks take out the ANZAC derby

SOUTH FREMANTLE have still to win a game in 2013 despite a plucky effort in the Anzac Day derby at Fremantle Oval. After a tight first half the Sharks gained control in the third quarter but three posters meant they were just 21 points in front at the last break. There were just two goals scored in the last quarter, both by East Fremantle. The highly efficient Sean Henson was a star for the Sharks kicking four goals, Josh Simpson was brilliant with a couple of great high marks and inspirational chases while Rory O’Brien, Cameron Suttcliffe and Mark McGough controlled the midfield. The busy Brad Cooper won the Anzac Derby Medal.  John Sgherza kicked four goals for South and Mitch Banner maintained his good form.

East Fremantle 12.11 (83) South Fremantle  7.12 (54)

At Joondalup Swan Districts had their best win of the season kicking six goals to West Perth’s one in the last quarter to win by 28 points. Dayle Garlett was impressive for Swans, Wes Lammie was again strong in the ruck, Wayde Twomey had another big game and Nathan Blakely, Tony Notte and Tim Geappen each kicked three goals. Mark Hutchings was tipped to make his Eagles debut this week, he didn’t and again starred for the Falcons, Jay Van Berlo has another good game and Josh Mellington kicked three goals.

Swan Districts 15.8 (98) West Perth 9.15 (70)

Perth have made it official. They’re back. After a tight tussle at Lathlain Park for three quarters the Demons crushed East Perth in the last kicking seven goals to one. Paul Bevan and Simon Tunbridge each kicked four goals and Alistair Smith was influential. Brendan Lee, Matt Rosa and Sharrod Wellingham were the best of the disappointing Royals.

Perth 19.16 (130) East Perth 11.13 (79)

PEEL coach Cam Shepherd might be wondering how his team didn’t beat Claremont at Rushton Park on Saturday. Thunder did a lot right but in the end couldn’t quite cope with Tigers big men Mark Seaby and Mitch Andrews or the experience of the top team. Seaby and Andrews each kicked two goals to add value to their ruck ascendancy. Jake Murphy was again good in the midfield, though he does play with an Eagle-like search for high tackles, Andrew Browne was efficient, Paul Medhurst kicked two brilliant goals in the last quarter, Alex Silvagni was creative in defence and Andrew Foster also played well. Peel’s back line, led by Paul Bower with support from James Hawksley, was impressive, Hayden Crozier worked very hard, Matt Orzel was inspirational, Brendon Jones was industrious in the midfield and Matthew Taberner showed promise as a key forward and Viv Michie did some classy things.

Claremont 14.11 (95) Peel 11.12 (78)

  1. Les, nice coverage of what’s happening way out west. Thanks. Your title reminded me how much I’d love to see a ‘Sharks’ in the AFL.

    Cheers
