WAFL – Round 14: A pair of thrillers

West Perth didn’t score until the 24 minute mark of the first quarter at home while the visitors piled on 5.6 (36). Subiaco still led by five goals at half time. Eight goals to three in the second half propelled the Falcons to a one-point victory. Aaron Black was good from the start, unlike most of his West Perth team mates, Matt Guaddagnin was a good player and Josh Mellington kicked three goals including the winner. Andrew McDougall had his best game for the Lions.

West Perth 13.13 (91) Subiaco 13.12 (90)

Swan Districts led all day at Fremantle Oval and they were just too much for the home team. The most important player in the Swans line up is Tim Geappen who roams the forward line, sets things up and even does a bit of ruck work – he kicked 2.5 so could have been even more damaging. Dayle Garlett displayed a high skill level and kicked five goals, Kirk Ugle kicked four and Shaun Hilderbrandt’s running was very important. Mitch Banner had another good game for the Bulldogs and Jacob Martinez was lively.

Swan Districts 20.18 (138) South Fremantle 13.8 (86)

Perth kicked eight goals to none in the third quarter to put an end to the contest at Rushton Park. Matthew Moody was in sensational form for the Demons playing loose in defence at times and drifting forward to kick two goals, Callum Collard kicked four goals on debut and Brett Hodge had another good game. Matt Orzel and Viv Michie worked well in the Peel midfield.

Perth 18.9 (117) Peel 9.13 (67)

East Perth trailed East Fremantle at each change at Leederville, hit the front in the last quarter, lost the lead and then got it back again when Freddie Clutterback kicked a classy goal with less than a minute to go. Brendan Lee was tireless in the midfield for the Royals, Paul Johnson controlled the ruck and Josh Smith and Michael Swan each kicked three goals. Andrew Stephen was excellent in defence for the Sharks and Mark McGough and Rory O’Brien put in their usual contributions.

East Perth 14.7 (91) East Fremantle 13.10 (88)

Ladder: Claremont 44; West Perth 32; East Perth 28; Perth 24; Swan Districts 24; East Fremantle 20; Subiaco 20; Peel 12; South Fremantle 8.
