WAFL Round 11 – East Perth v West Perth: Royal Resolve Conquers Fading Falcons

East Perth surged into the WAFL top four with a stunning 17.12 (114) to 14.11 (95) triumph against arch rivals West Perth in a grandstand finish at Medibank Stadium on WA Day Monday.

The Royals, who trailed by three goals at the final change, stormed home with six unanswered goals in the final quarter.

Unfortunately the victory was dually soured, with both Cale Morton (hamstring) and Garry Moss (knee) suffering major injury scares.

For much of the game, the game was marred by atrocious disposal by both sides. However as the match wore on, the appetite for the contest grew.

West Perth’s run was fantastic, with Ray Bartholomew and Jason Salecic leading the charge. Their long kicking provided beneficial, along with sloppy marking from the Royals defenders.

However late in the third quarter, the Royals began to overcome their shoddy disposal and peppered the scoreboard. In the final term, they surged like ants to an unattended sandwich. West Perth simply stopped to a walk.

The Royals had plenty of regular contributors, with Aaron Sweet (28 disposals), Craig Wulff (27) and Brendan Lee (25) getting plenty of the ball.

The crowd nudged around 5000 people and seemed to embrace the traditional timeslot on WA Day, despite the AFL fixture at night.

East Perth have the bye this week, while West Perth face a stern test against Claremont at Arena Joondalup.
