WAFL preliminary final…

South’s Marlion Pickett is tackled by Subi’s Scott Hancock while Lachlan Delahunty provides support and umpire Kyal Horsely makes his decision (the real umpire said, “Give it to me.”).

SOUTH FREMANTLE scored the first three goals of the WAFL preliminary final and for a while it seemed their slick ball movement had Subiaco rattled. The Lions steadied mid-way through the quarter and two goals by small forward Liam Baker eased them back into the contest. Subiaco scored six goals to one in the second quarter and never gave up control of the game.

prelimsmallRyanIn an even team performance Lachlan Delahunty again impressed as a mobile big man, Brad Stevenson, strangely left out of the team last week, marked well and kicked three goals, Liam Ryan (right) kicked two goals in an unusually high possession game, defenders Angus Litherland and Wayde Twomey were solid and creative, Adam Cockie was again powerful in the midfield and Baker finished with three goals.

Marlion Pickett in defence and later in the ruck was South’s best player, Cory Dell-Olio kicked three goals in a lively attacking effort, Mason Shaw marked well and kicked two goals, Haiden Schloithe and Ashton Hams used the ball well and Matthew Parker’s pace and skill shone again.

Subiaco will meet Peel in the grand final next Sunday. It’s the fourth straight grand final for the Lions and a repeat of last year’s match-up won by the Thunder.

Subiaco 14.14 (98) South Fremantle 10.6 (66)

Comments

  1. Sadly, Subiaco not South Freo legitimate 2017 premiers. Congratulations. Grrr.

  2. It will be an interesting weekend of state league grand finals, Les. Three standalone state league teams coming in as the underdog against three AFL reserves sides. Staring down the barrel for the first time of all state leagues (with AFL reserves sides) being won by AFL reserves sides. Not sure how I feel about that.

  3. Four flags in a row for Subi. Some effort.

  4. Subi have played in 11 of the past 15 grand finals. Well run. YES. Well coached. YES. Access to a pot of gold unavailable to the other clubs. YES

  5. Mick Jeffrey says

The real last blast at Subi featuring the team returning to their spiritual home against the team of Ross Ballers. Who would have thought that 10 years ago?

  6. 10 years ago no one would have put Peel and grand final in the same sentence… and it’s not that long ago that Subi was in the same boat.
