V.R.C. Derby Day Almanacker Selections

A ripper card at Flemington tomorrow.

The predicted inclement weather adds complexity to the equation solving process.

Our experts have been busy unlocking the form guide code and secrets.

This is what they’ve come up with.

MOC’s Morals

MOC is a big fan of Sistine Angel (Race 7, No. 13) each way in the Myer Classic (Empire Rose Stakes) at big odds. Beat Shamrocker and Brazilian Pulse (who were both flying) this track and trip last Spring, and is primed third up. Not sure why there’s a knock on Manawanui. It should bolt in.

Smokie’s Smokies

Smokie’s excited (on a couple of fronts) and has a lot to say.

Race 1: Galah (No. 1), showed an impressive turn of foot in the Lightway Stakes, and apparently enjoys the rain. Best bet of the day.

Race 2: Moyenne Corniche (No. 4) ran on well in the Herbert Power and should be stronger in this. Green Moon (No. 3) is still looking for a Cup start, and based on its Caulfield Cup form will be right in the finish.

Race 3: Can the classy Atlantic Jewel (No. 1) go the extra distance? M Kavanagh obviously thinks so, and that’s good enough for me.

Race 4: Some punters tend to question Sepoy’s (No. 1) class, but 9 wins from 10 starts makes pretty good reading. It should be far too strong down the straight. Hot Snitzel (No. 3), along with putting thoughts of Monday’s Cup eve lunch into my head, could challenge.

Race 5: It’s Time for Rekindled Interest (No. 12) to break the shackles of bad luck and bad piloting. Glass Harmonium (No. 8) also had a horror W.S. Cox Plate, but will be right in it.

Race 6: Isopach (No. 2) was well back in the Norman Robinson, but has won at Flemington and could surprise at odds. Manawanui (No. 1) looks all class, but could be tested by the distance. Niagara (No. 10) seemed to have a bit left in the tank at Caulfield.

Race 7: Mosheen (No. 16) has no weight and the form hoop aboard and could surprise the classy More Joyous (No. 1).

Race 8: I have said it before…Sister Madly (No. 6) is a seriously good horse. Neeson (No. 3) could be suited by a heavier track.

Race 9: Probably the most wide-open race on the card, and if the weather and track have deteriorated during the day, it is a real raffle. Toorak Toff (No. 2) will be much more active than the politician he is named after. Doubtful Jack (No. 5) might enjoy the heavier going more than most. No’s: 2, 5, 11.

Downer’s Declarations

With the usual clash of post-Cox Plate afterthoughts and those gearing up for Tuesday, Efficient (No. 1) might be the one best placed to win the LKS Mackinnon Stakes (Race 5) this year. Midas Touch (No. 3) will be running on, but Lloyd (er, R. Hickmott) will have him winding up for 3200m now. Glass Harmonium (no. 8) may grab a soft lead up front and kick away. Rekindled Interest (No. 12) looking for better luck this time.

Induna’s (Race 6, No. 7) Geelong Derby trial cakewalk looked the best warm-up thus far, a soft win going away with plenty in the tank. The Sheikh will be on course to lead him in. Prefer this to the short price and distance question mark on Manawanui (No. 1). Isopach (no. 2) is a cheeky roughie to consider.

The international Moyenne Corniche (Race 2, No. 4) will relish Flemington’s expanses in the time-honoured Hotham Handicap.

Hoping More Joyous’ (Race 7, No. 1) price drifts out in the Myer Classic (Empire Rose Stakes).

Don’t even do the form in the Salinger Stakes (Race 8). Just back Almanac darling, Temple of Boom (No. 2), no questions asked.

Consider Bart’s Gliding (Race 3, No. 5) each-way against the awesome Atlantic Jewel (No. 1).

Flynn’s Fancies

Flynn says back Galah (Race 1, No. 1) into Green Moon (Race 2, No. 3). Then spend the rest of the day puffing away on a Cohiba, savouring a Harry Taylor endorsed cognac and waiting for Temple Of Boom (Race 8, No.2).

Harms’s Hopes

See above the tip chart for this potentially very lucrative parlay.

Comments

  1. Skip of Skipton says

I was keen on Foreteller in the L.K.S. McKinnon (he was from Skipton too!), but notice that Matt Stewart in the Sun has tipped him, so I might have to reassess. Efficient then I suppose.

I also have a Feeling that a certain horse might be Ready to produce in the G2 6f event. (I backed him when he won the Slipper and became quite fond, unfortunately)

I generally avoid the Bookies Benefit and hate the fact that it is always the last leg of the Quaddie now, but I actually reckon the Toff is a good thing.

  2. Race 7 number 14 – each way. Pay for your next holiday.

  3. Is Van Der Hum running tomorrow ?

  4. David Downer says

Moyenne Corniche a scratching in the Lexus in the hope of falling into the Cup field.

Now keen on Niwot. Did a stack of work in the Caulfield Cup. Loves Flemington.

Is Lights of Heaven actually the “fresh horse on the scene” in the L.K.S MacKinnon? Cracking race!

  5. Nice get with Niwot DD. I was at the races Ramsden day and he won well. Not wothout a lihjt-weights chance in a tough tough race.

Had a non-day – couldn’t find any punting rhythm with scratchings and Moyenne Corniche and Torio’s, and my nags just seemed to labour.

  6. David Downer says

    Cheers JTH,

Niwot the most painless $8.60 winner you’d ever see! Dominant winners of the Lexus/Hotham who drop weight are proven in the Cup, so must be “included in multiples” on Tuesday.

The punters lament tales kicked in after that. Induna a certainty beaten in the Derby after the rough-housing and being trapped wide. Our 50-1 speck Isopach just missed a place, did beat home Manawanui.

Almanac favourite Temple of Boom missed in a head-bob. But a tough win from Sister Madly facing the headwind up the entire straight.

    Great (albeit frustrating!) day’s racing

  7. Peter Flynn says

    Frustrating.

I alighted the train at Kyneton.

My wallet continued on towards Bendigo.

My wallet had the good sense to catch the train back to Kyneton the next day where we were reunited.

In the wallet were Induna and Temple Of Boom tickets that should have been worth far more.
