They’re running @ Corowa

Corowa has held Melbourne Cup meetings since 1960. They were trendsetters. It was a non-TAB, a good crowd attended; a pleasant day for all.

However in recent years the day’s gotten crowded with Albury, Wangaratta and Wodonga, for a few years, also running on the day. Mansfield has a picnic race on Melbourne Cup day, all this being just after Berrigan Cup on Derby Day. This year Corowa had its meeting on the Monday. It was granted TAB status,  a seven race twilight meeting.

Being members, we set forth to join a crowd of around 3,000 enjoying a lovely spring day. Despite rain over night and in the morning, the track held up , being a good 4.

The day started with a scratching at the barrier. It finished the same way, with no fewer than three horses being scratched at the barrier: a record of sorts?

It was a day for the youth, the apprentices to take the honours with them saluting in six of the races. Tahlia Hope being the standout with a double. Dan McCarthy from Wangaratta took the training honours with a double.

I watched my horse, (being a 5% owner), lead all the way until the last 50 metres, to be swamped, finishing out of the placings. I wondered about the pre-race conversations held with the trainer and jockey, as to how the race panned out.  Ooh well, you’re only ever one race away from a winner.

One more race at Corowa to finish 2017. The last Thursday of the year, 28/12, they run there again. It is a TAB meeting, and we’ll be there.

Glen!
