The View from Shepparton – Round 21

by Peter Schumacher

Liam Jurrah, that mark is what sets our game apart from all of the rest, long live AFL. By the way, nothing too much wrong with Goddard’s mark either.

I happened to view a DVD of the 2001 Grand Final which Brisbane won against Essendon. This year my extended family and I did not even discuss the possibility of their coming over to view Sunday’s match on my you beaut 63 inch Samsung behemoth. How the mighty have fallen. At least my mob on their showings in recent games have some hope for next year. Essendon on the other hand have been on the downhill slide since the forced resignation of Rudd, sorry, meant Sheedy. Brown playing for the Lions makes such a difference to that side. Ah, what might have been, this year.

Adelaide also have some momentum going into next year, but they must be fed up with yet another close loss against the Pies. I must confess to being glued to the election coverage so missed out completely on what was obviously a another stirring match.

Geelong had their predictable win against the Blues. Rotten that Pods got himself into a position where he is no no longer eligible for the Brownlow, he would have at least polled some votes.

The Western Bulldogs have fallen foul of injuries, they will probably go out one two now, Sydney on the other hand are the only interstate team capable of causing the Victorian sides any trouble in the finals but frankly I am not holding my breath even on that.

It was a battle of the Riewoldts as St Kilda beat Richmond. Great that both have found form be even better if Richmond had been finalists this year. I reckon that they too can go into next season with some hope. The Saints could yet be dangerous but really, it will be a Geelong Collingwood Grand Final.

Fremantle are gone, doubt that they will beat Carlton next week. Injuries have well and truly got the Dockers as well. Hawthorn played well against the Freo ressies in Tasmania.

Good win by North Melbourne against the Eagles but then the latter is the bottom side. They won’t make the eight now of course but they have had a good season.

I thought that Melbourne would beat Port. After the way they thrashed my mob in round 5 I thought that the Dees could be anything this year. Port could do OK under Primus next year the way they have mostly been playing since he took over.

Andrew McLeod must have been one of the best players ever to have played the game and those of us who either saw him play or have DVD’s (say) of the Crows two premiership wins are privileged to have seen him in action..

  1. Nice work, as always Peter. However, I think you’ll find that it is still possible for Boomer’s Roos to make the 8. Of course to find out how, you’ll have to read my stats column for this week!

And I’m still tipping the Saints to make the GF.
