The Odd Friday Lunch (July 15): Col Kinnear

Col Kinnear

Colin was a good amateur footballer but two knee operations brought an early end to his playing career. After a few coaching positions he took the VFA Coburg Lions to their first premiership in 51 years. He then moved to North Melbourne as assistant and reserves coach for three years under Malcolm Blight and then Barry Cable.
Colin then became reserves and assistant Carlton coach from 1984 for five years, under David Parkin and Robert Walls, winning two reserves and one seniors premiership.

He was then senior coach for the Sydney Swans for three seasons.

After coaching in Sydney he returned to Carlton as Chairman of Match and then also became Football Manager. He was General Manager of Football operations 1997 to 2003 and General Manager – Special projects for a year after that – a long involvement at the highest level with the Carlton Football Club.

Colin was also associated with the Carlton Cricket Club for 20 years playing in three Senior premierships. He was a wicketkeeper. Colin has been inducted as a Life Member of both the Carlton Football and Cricket clubs.
