The Blues might be the real deal

Rd 3 2012 FEARLESS – The Blues might be the real deal..February woes -what?

 by Paul Thomson

Carlton inflicted Friday 13th woes on Collingwood from the start until the end, in a game that was supposed to confirm whether the Blues were the real deal. A 1o goal win saw Eddie Betts led the charge but was well-supported by Murphy in a terrific team effort. Collingwood haven’t chased so much opposition in at least 1 year.

The Tigers and Demons were neck and neck at the main break at the MCG on Saturday. A critical game for both winless teams, the Tigers adopted the 3rd qtr as the premiership quarter, kicking 9.3 to 1.1. An 8 pt lead blew out to a 59 pt lead at the last change and end. Cotchin’s move to the goalsquare a masterstroke, 3 goals with Miller.

An unbeaten Sydney Swans travelled to the City of Churches to take on Port at AAMI. The Power have improved in 2012 but Sydney led from midway in first qtr to the end, incurring some Power surges after half time. Daniel Stewart and Justin “Napoleon Dynamite” Westhoff held up the Port attack, kicking 5. Swans by 22pts.

Mark Harvey got a standing ovation on his return to Subiaco after his shock exit. He returned as a Brisbane coach and surprisingly didn’t turn around and clock Ross Lyon for taking his job! This game won’t be watched much, bar injuries to Fyfe, Leuenberger – aptly-named Lion cub Longer in the ruck vs Aaron Bigfoot! Freo by…

Dustin Fletcher performed several defensive mopups in the last 15 minutes to save Essendon from a surprise loss to the Gold Coast on Saturday night. Playing game 350, Fletcher’s efforts rallied his teammates after the Suns finally displayed the intensity required at AFL level. Karmichael Hunt typified this, he’ll be good. Dons by 17pts.

The Bulldogs might want to see what BBBBarry is up to, after again failing to exert much scoreboard pressure on the Saints. A 63pt win for new Saints coach Scott Watters, his counterpart Brendon McCartney left to rue a forward structure that yielded 2.6 to 3 /4 time. Saints’ skipper Roo moving freer than last year, a good sign.

Gotta love an oval with a spectator area that is 75% hill. Such is Blacktown Olympic Park where GWS Giants hosted West Coast. The Eagles came with a bang, registering a club record 11.4 in the first qtr. GWS then scored their largest score in AFL history 10.9.69. After the first qtr, Eagles won the last 3 qtrs by 23pts. WCE by 81 – Shuey 5.

Adelaide came unbeaten to the MCG to take on the Hawks on Sunday. The newly freed up Crows kept pace with the Hawks for a qtr thanks largely to Tippett. From there the Hawks were keen to atone for last week, slowly leaving Adelaide in their wake. Fists of Fury Gibson got 30 touches and young Breust looked sharp. Hawks 56.

The last time North beat Geelong in 2007, a team meeting resulted and led to a 15 game Cat winning streak and a drought-breaking premiership. Having sent some choccies to Cameron Ling for his retirement, Boomer Harvey relished Ling’s absence, clocking up 38 stats, assisted by Ziebell. North led at every change to win by 17pts
