The Ashes presentation ceremony – Respect

With the presentation of The Ashes trophy to Australia, and with news of Ron Tandberg’s death today, I was moved to this sketch.

Let’s simply call it “Respect.

  1. ER – yes that sign behind the players did not sit well with me either.

In contrast to that was a brilliant interview on TV last night with Rocket Rod Laver and Margaret Court. The message that both got across was respect for your opponent. That’s something that the cricketers could learn.

  2. James Lang says

Sadly I rank it up there with the sprinkler dance, singing “stand up if you’re 3 nil up” at the Oval in 2013 and the alleged peeing on the pitch. It just looked smug and lacking humility

  3. Just a pathetic cringe worthy sign you would tell a 2 year old off for that sort of behaviour
Embarrassing and a photo the players would want and framed with that garbage in the back ground

  4. It was about as Angry Anderson and the Batmobile as it gets.

    Boganic and devoid of class.

Good to see the time honoured Australian tradition of ‘Blowing’ that Ivo Bligh noted on the first Ashes Tour is being championed by Cricket Australia.

  5. Pamela Sherpa says

I agree with the comments above , and like you Dips I thoroughly enjoyed the Rod Laver – Margaret Court interview . How ironic and refreshing was the contrast with the habitual, cringeworthy behaviour of the Australian cricketers, their marketing masters/monsters and their young upstart tennis cousins? The words lingering in my mind after the Laver – Court interview are respect and discipline . Staples.

  6. Luke Reynolds says

Just embarassing. Well played ER, you’ve nailed it with your excellent cartoon.

  7. Mark 'Swish' Schwerdt says
  8. G’day all.
There’s really not much to add about this appalling episode.
    Thanks for your comments.
I’ll check out that interview Dips. Perspective.
    Thanks for the link, Swish.

  9. Trevor Blainey says

yep ordinary by CA. the difference between that and the Poms in 2013 being nongs after winning is that the body running the game planned it, presumably consulted others (or didn’t, who knows?) and went ahead and did it anyway. triumphalism will bite you in the bum eventually. could be as soon as the ODIs or in South Africa or anytime until we go there. win graciously, lose bravely.

  10. Well played, e.r.
I never ceased to be amazed by Cricket Australia’s cringe-worthy and heavy-handed marketing. Seriously, what is wrong with this people? And it is another in a long line of examples of why we find it so difficult to like our cricket team.

  11. John Butler says

From the people who brought you:

“Glamorous, jaw dropping, captivating, brilliant. No, it is not Erin McNaught strutting down a catwalk. It is T20 cricket – and it is about to rock Australia like never before.”

    At least they’re consistent.

  12. Spot on T Blainey. Quite a few would have signed off on it.

Suppose we keep asking questions, I reckon.

  13. Steve Fahey says

Well done for calling out this rubbish ER (and Greg Baum in the Fairfax papers as noted above). It was embarrassing and cringe-worthy as others have noted.
