Dear Knackery,
Welcome to the annual celebration of footy and haiku!
Grand final day –
the stadium fills
with hope
Tomorrow, the mighty Western Bulldogs and the Sydney Swans will play off in the AFL Grand Final at the MCG.
To celebrate this famous day on the Australian sporting calendar, haiku poets and non-haiku poets alike from all over the world are once again invited to take part in a real-time footy haiku kukai* for the duration of the match. It’s basically a call of the game in haiku. Yes, haiku.
This year will be the 5th time this event has been staged (and the first time without Hawthorn!) Last year, more than 60 die-hard poets participated, producing a record 200+ haiku. That’s nearly 2 haiku per minute of the game. Almost the same number of times a team kicks the ball in a match. You can read the highlights here: http://www.footyalmanac.com.au/parades-and-brightly-coloured-men-the-2015-afl-grand-final-haiku-kukai/
So if you are watching the game, listening to the radio in the back shed or, like me, watching from the local Irish pub here in Stockholm, Sweden (at 6.30am!) log-in to this event and drop us a line or three! You can find the event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/299623650415613/
