Talking and Discussing about Footy is more fun than Getting Money

from Yoshi, our Japanese correspondent:

Recently St Kilda Footy Club has shared a Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation’s Facebook post on the club’s Facebook page.

The video shows how schoolkids behave (talking about odds) at their school. It’s shocking.

Why don’t they just enjoy playing and/or watching sports?

I reckon they talk about odds because their parents talk about in front of them and media covers odds. Listening to SEN online, Sports Bet guys appear on their programs presenting odds.

Gambling has restriction on the age. Only people at the age of 18 and over are allowed to gamble. Why is there any advertisement on SEN while kids are listening?

On the St Kilda’s shared Facebook post, I suggest the club to complain SEN about talking about odds and advertising the betting organisation.

I joined the footy tipping with my good mate and his family during the home and away season. I enjoyed tipping and discussing about predictions and games with him. But being top was not priority. I just enjoy tipping and never against my Saints as I want to support Saints from the bottom of the heart.

And I much prefer writing match reports here on the great Footy Almanac than getting extra money even I don’t get paid enough money from my work.

What do you think about the gambling issues on sports?

Just hope we will win the second flag soon, especially after Dogs and Tigers having ended long premiership draughts. 2. The Osaka Dingoes Player and Public Relations Officer: Player number 44 that I chose to honour Stephen Milne with my wish being like a small forward like him. Lenny Hayes' hardworking attitudes are adopted on my trainings and practices. Nick Riewoldt's great plays are in my player audiobook too. 3. Hi Yoshi, you are right. Too much advertising. I recommend you listen to 774 to get away from it, listen to SEN but when you’ve had enough, switch. No ads at all. The ads are everywhere, TV, radio, papers etc. Horrible stuff. Good on you for saying something.

  2. Spot on Yoshi being lucky enough to belong to a family (both sides) that has supported the Geelong fc. for over 140 years and me personly for 55yrs I have been fortunate to have witnessed among other things 1.G Farmer (the TRUE no.5 for Geelong the other one had a nice lease deal) 2. Seeing both Billy Ryan ( the great) and Ken Newland kick a point after the siren with nearly the entire crowd and the mounted police on the ground to beat Collingwood the billys one is on YouTube check it out 3.vs Richmond at the G 1973 we won about 6 games in 2 years and against THE classic Richmond side Bourke Clay ,Dean ect promptly destroyed them from the first bounce. 4 The 76 elimination vs Footscray never see a replay (would love too) but it still stands as the best game I ever attended. To state the obvious I go on and on for years on just the 60s70s let alone what came after .All these amazing highs and lows (nick Davis 4 goal last quarter for example) At no point did it occur to me that this experience could be enhanced by finacial gain.Personly I would feel cheap and nasty if all I got from a football game was money the emotional spiritual and life lessons (when I was young I didn’t remotely care when I discovered that there no Santa but to this very day when nth Melbourne STOLE Doug Wade it had a profound effect on me and was the major catalyst for me being the cynical bastard I am today , and I still think nth Melbourne should be deregisted) have been too important. In the past I spent many a happy arvo with mates on the punt talkin crap having a beer (as you do) but the gambling tsunami of recent years have taken the fun out with an almost surgical precision. And stating the obvious the social devastation and havoc we have to bear .as the line goes about knowing the price of everything but having no clue on the value of anything

  3. Hi Yvette and D thin,

Thank you for your comments and my apology for the very late respond.

Yvette – I have listened to ABC 774 and found they talked about news more than sports. Am I correct? I enjoy listening to weekly interviews with Mick Malthouse and Jimmy Bartel on SEN’s breakfast with Flank and Ox. But Sports Bet update comes after good interviews. Please no!

D Thom – Thanks for sharing the stories about your beloved Cats. Your club should be happy to have such a passionate fan. You must be happy to see Billy Brownless kicked the winning goal after the siren at the final game in 1994 against Footscray.

    Thanks

    Yoshi
