Superdogs’ super start to season

MID NORTH V RIVERLAND SUPERDOGS

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN AFL MASTERS – ROUND TWO

SUNDAY 22ND OF APRIL 2012, SPALDING OVAL

By Nick Kossatch

It is two wins from the first two games of the AFL Masters for the Riverland Superdogs after it easily accounted for Mid North by 86-points in Spalding on Sunday. In a scrappy affair, the visitors dominated from the outset and debutant Scott Watson slotted through the first goal against the struggling hosts. The Superdogs lent its President Lance Gum and Shane Hannagan to make up the numbers for Mid North.

The Superdogs got plenty of drive from its half back line with the club’s most eligible bachelor Jason Trew even drilling two goals and Brenton Fenwick showed he is a much fitter player – a far cry from the injury-prone ‘tequila-drinking’ government worker of two seasons gone past! His intercept and dash in the second quarter helped set up a goal.

Sam Ingerson and Nick Kossatch did little wrong although Kossatch provided friendly fire when team-mate Darren Tieste got in his way in a marking contest. Ben Meuret was a constant focal point at centre half forward whilst full forward duties were given to George Clooney look-a-like Paul Arnold – he threatened to pull himself off if he wasn’t to kick a goal.

This caused a mass debate between Arnold and the coach Shane Healy and the versatile Arnold was moved to defence after failing to convert any of his chances. Peter Aston managed not to get collected and was another good rebounding defender and as per usual Kenny Karpany was mercurial and kicked a long 60-metre goal.

Mark Neumann was another excellent performer and booted a neat goal from an acute angle in the final term and Ron Foulds capped off a dominant day with the final goal of the game.

The Riverland Superdogs play new team Adelaide University Greys on Sunday May 6 at Lyrup Oval starting at 1pm.
