WAFL round 17…

The day began at East Fremantle Oval on Saturday with a howling gale assisting the team kicking south. Peel won the toss and led by 22 points at quarter time. Time would tell whether that would be enough. A running goal from Jesse Adamini was the highlight of the quarter for the Sharks who seemed to do OK under the circumstances. In the second quarter the rain came down, East Fremantle kicked the first two goals and that was that. Peel’s hard workers, particularly Rory O’Brien, Matt De Boer and Andrew Haydon helped wrest back control and the Sharks didn’t kick another goal. Alex Silvangi made a return to football and looked assured in defence, Darcy Tucker showed some class and, more importantly, got hold of the ball, captain Gerald Ugle was important and kicked two goals and Brett Milward kicked three goals in just his second league game. Jesse Crichton laid 17 tackles for the Sharks and was one of his team’s better midfielders, Jayden Schofield provided plenty of run while George Hampson and Jamie McNamara also worked hard. East Fremantle’s collapse, they’ve lost their past four games, is one of the mysteries of the season.

Peel 10.9 (69) East Fremantle 3.8 (26)

Conditions at Leederville Oval for the Perth derby were also horrible. West Perth did well to limit East Perth in the first quarter but mucked things up by kicking 1.7 in the second quarter when they got their chance. The Royals enjoyed the rain in the third to kick five goals and set up an important win. The wastefulness of the Falcons is reflected in the inside 50 count which the losing team won 71 to 38. Jonathan Giles kicked three goals and he and fellow big man Paul Johnson were the most important players for East Perth, Corey Adamson was a strong presence and Eric MacKenzie was useful back-stop especially in the last quarter. Aidan Lynch battled hard for West Perth, Max Duffy’s cleverness was useful and he kicked two goals, Luke Meadows was outstanding and Shane Nelson put in his usual effort.

East Perth 8.7 (55) West Perth 4.18 (42)

The ladder: Subiaco 44; South Fremantle 40; West Perth 40; Peel 32; East Perth 32; East Fremantle 28; Perth 24; Claremont 16; Swan Districts 8.

Next week: Thursday: Subiaco vs South Fremantle. Saturday: Claremont vs East Perth; Perth vs Peel; Swan Districts vs East Fremantle.

Comments

  1. Thanks again for your WAFL wrap-up, Les.
Yet another wet WAFL Saturday, making every goal scored effectively worth three.
I saw East Perth beat the arch-enemy West Perth at the Cardies/Falcons’ former home, Leederville Oval.
While the away team has won 13 (or maybe 14) of the past Freo derbies, the home team has won the eight most recent Perth derbies.
On a very sad note, East Perth reserves player Beau Chatley suffered a severe spinal injury.
I didn’t see the incident, but I’m sure the footy community Australia wide is hoping and praying that Beau makes a full recovery.
