Round 9 – St Kilda v Sydney: Pride Match or Ross Lyon Curse

Saturday, 20 May 2017

1:45 pm Docklands Stadium (4:45 am York, UK; 12:45 pm Kyoto, Japan)

I am extremely disappointed with the result.

Carlton beat Swans at MCG in Round 6 and the mighty Saints won over the Blues last week. Then how come we lost to Swans by 50 points?

The great Bulldog Almanacker Bob Speechley had sent me an email telling his Sainter friends would be visiting Japan including Kyoto, so we met up on the game day. We went to a temple and a shrine and talked about footy and life, so had a lovely time.

But other things didn’t go right. When I washed my clothes in the morning I forgot to put a draining hose to the bathroom so the small adjoining room, where the washing machine is located, was flooded.   Fortunately not too seriously.

Then I walked and saw a bus I thought that I had be on, so I signalled the driver and tried to run fast to catch up, but it didn’t work.  Then I realised it was not the bus I had planned to get on (it was running late).

On the bus going back home, I remembered about what happened with Swans.

  1. Ross Lyon left St Kilda just days after the loss to Sydney in the Elimination Final in 2011. I wonder if we have a curse against Swans after the shocking loss or not;
  2. We faced Swans just a week after played against the navy Blues in the last three times.

Rd 8 St Kilda 10.8.68 def by Sydney 18.10.118

St Kilda have been defeated by Swans all the times after having beat Carlton.

If I ask AFL not play Sydney just after Carlton, I would be the same as Ox who complained his Demons playing Saints at Round one at Etihad Stadium. Instead I want Saints to overcome the fixture and curse so that we break the bad record next time.

Now, I doubt we will be top eight at the end of Round 9.

I really hope I get positive and best solution in regarding with my British immigration issues. And then I will see in York the Saints go marching in against Swans.

    Good stuff Yoshi,
The head to head record between the two clubs is fascinating. The Swans (South Melbourne even) seemed to have a great record against the Saints. When you consider that they are both not what you’d call paragons of success why so many victories to the Swannies? Intriguing.

  2. G’day Phil,

Thanks for your comment and my apology to the late respond.

I heard St Kilda and then South Melbourne had Lakeside rivalry before the blood moved to Sydney in 1982. Sadly Swans seem to dominate. Swans are bouncing back slightly now. I wish we could play them at Round 6 when Carlton won at MCG.

    Cheers

    Yoshi
