Round 4 – Who will win?: Heads or tails?

Hands up Almanackers who picked Brisbane in their final 8 for season 2019?

Not too many I would imagine!

And it’s becoming that sort of season: one of imagination; not knowing what will, or is, likely to happen, not matter what scenario we may imagine, we probably can’t get it right on the current form of the teams.

After 3 rounds of football, with upset after upset, only two sides are undefeated. Geelong and Brisbane sit atop the premiership ladder, while some of the more fancied performers linger in the bottom half with only one win, or in Melbourne’s case, zip wins.

Results continued to be all over the place in Round 3. Here are some observations from the round.

Brisbane continued on their merry way with their win over the Power who must be disappointed with their effort.

GCS in another close match for them, downed the improved Western Bulldogs  by 5 points in a cliffhanger. Bulldog fans will very disappointed as most likely they had this game chalked in as a win pre-season.

Dockers just got home from St Kilda who continue to defy the odds with their improvement perhaps vindicating their faith in coach Alan Richardson.

In the Grand Final replay the Eagles repeated their performance against the Pies and were solid victors, though the Pies were once again consistent in their performance and will rate highly at season’s end. Played well in their two defeats and have not been disgraced.

Richmond fans must be wondering what sin they have committed with the payback they have been receiving. Injuries, of course, haven’t helped. And Dusty suspended for two weeks is sure to bring further woe to the Tigers. Their second stringers need to do better, more like Jake Stringer!

Jake Stringer in kicking four goals against the Demons was instrumental in the Bombers’ win with his continuing good form. It was a cut-throat match for both teams, with the much hyped Melbourne expected for big things this season but they couldn’t match it when it counted against the relieved Bombers who desperately needed this win. Melbourne were too loose on the back line, had too many front runners who were not willing to  get their hands dirty  for the full 100 minutes, and one quarter of footy is not good enough to win a match.

Round 4 is looking once again to be a tipster’s nightmare. Some cracking games could easily result in either team winning. Toss of the coin in most cases.

Sydney or Melbourne? Sydney haven’t played well, and Melbourne, well this is a season defining game for them you would think and they will be desperate to win, at least they should be. Heads for Sydney.

Pies or Dogs? I think the Pies should bounce back and win this game. But, it will be close!

Geelong should continue on their merry way and cramp the style of GWS on the narrow Kardinia Park.

Will the Brisbane bubble burst or can the Bombers continue their good form from last week? Dons need to find a forward to replace the injured McKernan but my heart says they have turned the corner and the Bombers will win at the MCG on Saturday.

PA and Richmond is anyone’s game, but the Tigers down on form and confidence will struggle to regain both against the Power at home. Power by not much.

Adelaide will be looking to redeem their disappointing efforts and should atone  against the Roos.

The Eagles should account for the Dockers in the WA derby, but who knows? Funny things can happen in footy!

Gold Coast continue to surprise punters and their good form should see them home against the improving Carlton.

St Kilda were stiff last week and have been playing well. Can they upset the Hawks? I don’t expect so, but this is one of those games where anything may happen with the underdog getting up and winning. But this time, the computer says no!

Hopefully Round 4 can provide a better indication how most teams are travelling, or will it be like the past three weeks, a round of upsets and surprises.

Time will tell!
