Round 22 – Collingwood v Gold Coast: The Ground’s Half Empty

I was at Etihad Stadium last week for Collingwood’s win over Gold Coast. Part of a terrible crowd of just over 17,000. Worst atmosphere at a Pies game that I’ve ever been to. Wrote a song about the night that was considered but ultimately unsuccessful in getting included on the footy songs segment of the Coodabeen Champions.

To the tune of “Reckless (Don’t Be So…)” by Australian Crawl.

Meet me at the Docklands Stadium
The one down Wurundjeri Way
Not too hard to get in
Not too many here today
Hear the umpire blow his whistle
Hear all that the players say
The fans are sparse and quiet
Not a usual Collingwood game

Magpie fans
Don’t go to the Docklands
We don’t like
That end of the city

So, sit wherever you like
The grounds half empty
Sit wherever you like
The grounds half empty

We like watching Scott Pendlebury
Strut his stuff on the MCG
Docklands isn’t much fun after dark
Would rather play at Victoria Park

Magpie fans
Don’t like the Docklands
We don’t like
That end of the city

So, sit wherever you like
The grounds half empty
Sit wherever you like
The grounds half empty

  1. Luke Eddie on more than one occasion made the point the pies could draw a crowd any where any time sadly that is well and truly now incorrect ( v Freo on the Friday night at the g and the games against the blues and power last season were terrible )

  2. Luke,
Good work…You are a little stiff, mate.
There have been plenty worse ditties on the Coodabeens over the years.
Particularly the tiresome “Melbourne supporters like skiing” ones.
Time for some new subjects, I say.

  3. Good choice of song Luke, the melancholy refrain and all.

I reckon Ed & the hierarchy would secretly have been OK with the crap turnout.

There was no effort on the club’s part to urge punters along, no seat upgrades or anything.

It’ll be used as evidence to support next year’s fixture request to not play home games at Etihad.
