Round 12 Review: Seriously devaluing the worth and market value of Friday night footy by Fearless

At what point in the leadup to the start of the season when the Bombers were getting ruled on by CAS and the Hawks were the 3xPeaters did the fixturers think it was ok to schedule Hawks v the patchwork Bombers? Surprisingly?!? Hawks won easily and there was nothing else on tv. Surely Port v Dogs or the SinCity Stoush would’ve made for better viewing…even repeats of the Simpsons or the Family Guy!

Not surprisingly, the last quarter of the Port v Dogs game at the Adelaide Oval made for epic viewing. A 3pt win to the visiting Dogs historic as they hadn’t had the best travelling form and Port was coming like a train. An Aaron Young goal within the last minute put Port back under a goal off the Dogs and it looked like an after the siren job. Ugly injury to Dahlhaus aside, the Dogs win meritorious. Port costly.

At some point Leppa must feel like a Leper. His Lions had started competitively against the visiting Dockers but a 9 goal 2nd qtr by Freo put paid to that. Pleasingly for Ross Lyon, his youngsters are getting some game time and the likes of Taberner, Weller and Tucker are showing they’re more comfortable on centre stage. Leppa’s Presser Honesty Exemplified…how often are we asked about job tenure?

North Melbourne got front row seats to the Paddy Dangerfield show on Saturday Night. A clinic of the highest order for a side sitting on top of the ladder from one sitting just below. For all the vague analysis of the impact of the 5 said injuries, the Cats performance was top class and Danger’s 48 stats a true reflection of his dominance. No Tomahawk, no worries. Cats by 31pts. North’s forwards down.

So much for a bit of inside knowledge! Ex Eagles Assistant-Turned Crows Coach Don Pyke was able to plot the demise of his old team with a stunning Betts-driven last quarter of 6.5 to 0.0. Domain Stadium Hoodoo? What? Adelaide finished with 9 players over 20 stats and Eagles 4. They had more ball winners and a more productive forward setup. A trip to BrisVegas for the Eagles now without NicNat.

The Blues gave themselves the Blues on Sunday with a little help from fellow Surf Coast Dangerfield prodigy Jack Steven and his Saints mates. From qtr time onwards Bolton’s Blues looked second to the ball and the Saints looked keen to atone from a sinful visit to the City of Churches the weekend before. Tim Membrey continued his renaissance up forward without St.Nick’s presence with 5. Saints by 32.

Rocket’s Gold Coast looked on the verge of causing the Tigers a major pain, before an 8 goal last qtr by the Tigers at the G on Sunday gave the home side’s fans a happy walk home. Midway thru the last qtr the Tigers needed a hero. Enter Dusty Neck Tatts…to inspire, to challenge and to lead his teammates to the win. Dusty’s 38stats achieved with assistance from Cotch & Grigg. Suns better but..

The Media Giants (that was newsprint on their jumper!?!) took on their crosstown rivals the Swans at the Spotless Stadium…so called the Battle of the Bridge is just so lame. The sin city stoush has got more zing. And what a game it was. The Mango and Charcoal Army was out in force with 21K at Spotless to witness two legit finals contenders battle it out. GWS home by 7 goals – proving legit-ness.

A fitting tribute to Neale Daniher was that his former charges, The Demons put Collingwood to the sword after Neale’s MND Big Freeze 2 had been completed. From early in the 2nd qtr, the Demons took control thru Bernie Vince and the bloke who would otherwise be Topol (Max Gawn). Not since 2007 had the Demons won on the QB holiday – even forward spread and superior teamwork. Demons 46.

Ch7 and AFL have never got FRiday night scheduling right. Too much Tigers, Blues, Bombers over the years. Only one way to make it work: give an even allocation across all teams. Perhaps 2 Friday nights every two years?
