Round 12 – Adelaide v St Kilda: Changing and Hopes

7:20 pm (10:50 am York, 6:50 pm Kyoto)
Adelaide Oval

People in general choose different political parties to govern the country time to time (but not here in Japan sadly). And footy clubs have good and bad times.

In the UK, the general election was held the day before of the match. Conservative Party (Tories) got the most votes but can’t form the Government by their own (hung Parliament).

Twenty years ago, Labour had a massive win in the general election and Tony Blair was swore as a Prime Minister. Then 43-year old built the new Britain.

The same year, Adelaide Crows won the Grand Final against St Kilda. St Kilda finished the top at the home and away season and Robert Harvey won the Blownlow. It was a good season for us and we led by 13 points at half time in the premiership decider. But at the end, the seventh season club (Adelaide) won the flag.

Mr Blair worked hard to build the better Britain, but made a big mistake supporting the US with the Iraq War in 2001. Meanwhile St Kilda went downhill winning the wooden spoon in 2000 under Tim Watson. And our seasons were not great following year and after.

He resigned the top job in 2007 and Gordon Brown took over. In that year Ross Lyon started his senior coaching job.

In the UK, Tories got the power back in 2010 and David Cameron became Prime Minister. At the other side of the world, St Kilda had a draw and then a loss at the Grand Final.

Then St Kilda again went downhill and won the wooden spoon in 2014 again.

I saw a picture St Kilda celebrating the win at Adelaide Oval years ago (I think it was in between 2008 to 2010). Then my thoughts came up as our road was like the British politics, especially Labour Party.

My prediction of the election was Tories would not win because of Brexit. And I hoped St Kilda would upset Crows as a bounce back from two losses in a row and because of the week rest.

At 2pm on Friday, I was asked to work until 9pm instead of 6pm. Oh no! I would miss listening to the live radio coverage.

My apologetic thoughts to my boys and coaches came up as I would fail meeting crazy fans’ responsibilities of being required to provide the best physical and mental conditions to support the club.

But I accepted the overwork in order to be paid more for the trip to the UK in August and for the future with Katie.

Then the restaurant was quiet at night, so I was released at 7.30pm. Checking the score, I was sad – St Kilda only scored a goal and two behinds, and were behind by 36 points.

The third quarter was not great either. Their lead was extended and no sign to change positively was seen. Meanwhile I enjoyed texting with my British darling.

Josh Bruce brought us a positive play for St Kilda. He collected the ball by the goal post at the beginning of the match and scored a goal beautifully as reducing his frustration being dropped off from matches. Then his mark at the third quarter was so brilliant and beautiful. He took advantages of being tall. But sadly no sources was found around me for the last quarter when he set shots.

The right time to be strong and win in Adelaide has not come yet? The change comes slightly? There is no excuse to follow others’ trends. Come on boys! Get motivated and show hungry spirits.

Seeing the win over Adelaide is another marching in to witness in York. I can’t wait moving to York and to be together with Katie.

Like a coach, I should ‘come down to the bench’ when we are struggling. As I will be ending my shift at 5 pm on Friday, I will be going west to Coolabah to watch the night footy against North Melbourne.

Once again I am unhappy with comments made on struggling old fashioned media. Dermott Brereton’s personal comment on Leigh Montagna was inappropriate. Tim Watson saying Joey’s acts were too sensitive was anger to me. On the other hand, Montagna and Richardson handled with the issues well.

Sadly media has changed negatively these years. So many negative comments are made to make ‘attractive headlines’. We Footy Almanac will be the best new age footy media soon.

About Yoshihiro Imagawa

Love, passion and pride are seen on the footy that is the biggest part of my life. 1. St Kilda Club member: I am a passionate and crazy Sainter. Just hope we will win the second flag soon, especially after Dogs and Tigers having ended long premiership draughts. 2. The Osaka Dingoes Player and Public Relations Officer: Player number 44 that I chose to honour Stephen Milne with my wish being like a small forward like him. Lenny Hayes' hardworking attitudes are adopted on my trainings and practices. Nick Riewoldt's great plays are in my player audiobook too. 3. Writing: Here on the Almanac and also on the World Footy News. My skills utilise on great footy websites.

  1. Yoshi, the Saints couldn’t do worse than have Jeremy Corbyn coaching.

When he took over the leadership of the British labour party they were many goals behind the Tories. When May won the toss, calling the election the Tories seemed to get even further ahead, then something surreal happened: Corbyn’s team came back !

Possibly Corbyn’s team may still go down, but the Tories have won a pyrrhic victory. Not too many political leaders lose their jobs after winning an election, actually i can’t think of too many footy coaches losing their job after wining the flag, maybe Jezza in 1979 was the exception but Corbyn’s team can be an inspiration for your Saints.

What do you think Yoshi ?

    Glen!

  2. G’day Glen,

    Thanks for your comment.

I admit I had no idea about Corbyn so I had to research about the current British Labour leader. He was not a big favourite man at the party and even his key politicians left cabinet positions. But his party was back thanks to the opposition’s errors.

Then I think we can’t rely on such a coach who depends on the opponents’ errors. As Seb Ross says we need to play our brand of attacking footy to achieve our goals.

    Cheers

    Yoshi
