Riverland Superdogs v Pooraka

RIVERLAND SUPERDOGS V POORAKA

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN AFL MASTERS – ROUND FIVE

SUNDAY 3RD OF JUNE 2012, LYRUP OVAL

The Riverland Superdogs returned to form with a brilliant 136-point thrashing against Pooraka in their AFL Masters game on Sunday in Lyrup, SA. There were no passengers as Shane Hannagan produced a tremendous best-on-ground effort with three goals and numerous possessions across half forward. He booted a Steve Johnson-type check-side goal in the first quarter as first year player Dave Setchel joined in the scoring feast with two to his name.

The unassuming Mark Neumann produced an ‘inverse screw punt’ which defied physics to split the uprights and it was the by-product to terrific team play involving ruckman Peter Hoffmann and the in-form Darren Tieste further upfield.

The hosts simply had no passengers as it built on its lead each quarter but Pooraka tried in vain. Sid Norton gorged on handballs from Nathan Willmott to boot four goals that included a ‘Hamish Hartlett’ sortie from inside the square – the goal square!

Karpany was his usual evasive self as he fed off Peter Hoffmann deft tap work and Shane Healy returned from Western Australia with fresh ideas as playing-coach. He had a glut of touches as well and fellow Lyrup legend Willmott, despite getting sunstruck at times, kicked five goals.

Hannagan added to the ‘humour highlights wheel’ by attempting what Neumann did successfully earlier and the ball sailed out on the full. Hannagan blamed his groin for the miskick – his only error for the game! Norton out-bodied three Pooraka opponents and gathered the ball that resulted in one of eight goals in the final quarter for the Superdogs.

The side tackles Gawler on Sunday, May 17th at Tanunda Oval from 12.30pm in its next game.
