Revisiting The Footy Almanac Grand Final Eve Lunch: Bruce Dawe’s September greeting
The Footy Almanac Grand Final Eve Lunch 2024 had a poetry vibe, thanks to Damian Balassone, Luke McNamara and Steph et al.
John Harms also read a short greeting, in poetic form, that Bruce Dawe had sent him in 2016 when also giving permission to include his brilliant poem ‘The High Mark’ in The Doggies Almanac of that year.
September Song
by Bruce Dawe
May more Septembers come to bring
More pennants to your team,
Until that too-long interval
Seems but a distant dream
– But then, as all true lovers know,
There’s nothing half as sweet,
When expectations are fulfilled,
There’s dancing in the street.
This was perfect for the lunch.
