Almanac Music: Songs of the Wimmera

Hi Almanackers, I need to pick your collective brains.

I’ve just moved to Horsham and being the music enthusiast I am I’m looking to put together a list of songs about/artists from the Wimmera region.

At this stage I’ve got Warracknabeal boy Nick Cave and Tom Wait’s 1986 track “Town with no cheer” (side note: Would recommend listening for Waits’ use of Aussie slang and given the overlander between Melbourne and Adelaide looks like it won’t be running from next year).

Please suggest away!

How about the Dimboola movie soundtrack Alex?

  2. John Williamson grew up in Quambatook in the NW Mallee. Is that part of the Wimmera? I always thought they were synonymous. I am a sentimental sucker for Cootamundra Wattle and Raining on the Rock. True Blue is a great song flogged to syrupy death.

Might be stretching the geography a bit, however Weddings Parties Anything’s ‘Hungry Years’ was the first song that sprang to mind: “down and out in Ouyen town…”

  4. The Weddings Parties Anything song “A Decent Cup of Coffee” may well qualify.

  5. Gee Whizz PB. You’ve been too long in Auralia

It’s a few miles from the Wimmera to Cootamundra. That’s on the South Western slopes in NSW. It’s claim to fame is that John O’Meally who rode with Ben Hall’s outlaws shot dead a chap there called Barnes. Also there’s a park with busts of Australian cricket captains.

    Glen!

Dimboola crooner Tim Watson did a mean version of “Ruby (Don’t Take Your Love To Town)”
