Chris Anstey, the famous Melbourne basketballer who has played at the elite level around the world, is the special guest at the next North Fitzroy Arms “Odd Friday Lunch” on October 13th, starting at 1:05pm.

Chris Anstey, born in Melbourne in 1975, 7 foot tall, was an aspiring young Tennis player, ranked as one of Australia’s top 15 year olds, who then switched and took up Basketball at 17 years old.

 

At 19 he played a season with Melbourne Tigers and then play 2 seasons with South East Melbourne Magic winning the NBL’s most improved Player & the NBL Championship, in 1996.

 

In 1997 he was the 18th selection in the USA NBA Draft going to the Portland Trail Blazers and was immediately traded to the Dallas Mavericks. In 2000 he was traded to the Chicago Bulls and finished with 155 NBA games.

 

He returned to the Victorian Titans in 2000-2001 season before starting a successful European career in 2003. He led Russian club Ural Great Perm to runners up in the Russian Championship and was named ULEB Cup MVP. In 2004 he led the Russian UNICS Kazan to a EuroChallenge Championship, the first win by a Russian team.

 

In 2006 he returned to the Melbourne Tigers and played with them through to 2009-10 winning numerous honours and MVPs. He finished with 3 NBL Championships, 2 as captain. He represented Australia in the 2000 & 2008 Olympics missing 2004 due to injury. He has been involved in various coaching positions since 2010, including being the Head Coach at Caulfield Grammar since 2010.
