20th Anniversary Dinner

Tuesday, 11 October 2016

6.30 for 7.00pm

Regal Park Motel, 44 Barton Terrace East, North Adelaide

Speaker: John Harms, ‘The Almanac: a lens into life, sport and the Universe?’

If you have a deep love and appreciation of sport but haven’t read or heard John Harms this is a rare opportunity to correct that record.

Since 2007 John is best known as an Australian Rules football writer and editor through the Footy Almanac originally established with Paul Daffey. But his work goes beyond this. His first three books were on cricket, horse racing and footy and were re-released as a sporting omnibus, Play On. His fourth book was a biography of rugby league star Steve Renouf, and his most recent is Life as I know it co-written with 2015 Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne.

A best-selling author, ABC Offsiders panelist and raconteur John will discuss how the Footy Almanac began as a footy book but has developed an active community of writers and readers around the website www.footyalmanac.com.au which attracts people who love sport and love life. What does the Almanac tell us about the appeal of sport and writing? And about community generally? As the Almanac prepares to celebrate its 10th anniversary John will navigate a path through many articles that have been published – the serious, the earnest, the playful, the insightful, the heart-warming – to try to understand what matters.
