Thanks for sharing this one with us Darky.

Must have been a ripper bloke – a real Queenslander!
Born in Winton, grew up in Rocky, UQ graduate, Longreach dentist, St Lucia legend.

It was a great old pavilion – played footy on the oval a couple of times against the Red Lions for UNE in Clem Jones Shield matches – you are right about the recuperation powers of times spent post-match…

Thanks John for sharing this. It captures the essence of what cricket clubs are all about – extreme personalities shaping cultures. Many’s the happy weekend afternoon we wiled away as inmates of Union College sitting on the steep bank overlooking WEP’s University sides playing on the Number 1 oval. Do you remember that fabulous Sunday evening we spent watching the Brisbane Grade cricket final on that oval? Souths v Valleys I think – it must have been March 1983. West Indian Monte Lynch made 150 and spent the afternoon spanking Greg Chappell all around the ground. Greg bowled himself unchanged for about 15 overs. The good old Union College social club put out a keg that afternoon as I recall. As Van the Man would have it – my momma told me there’d be days like this.
