No Dreamtime for the Tigers

Essendon   v   Richmond

Dreamtime   at   the   ‘G.   One   of   the   major   events   of   the   AFL   fixture,   but   somewhat   shadowed   by   the   two   teams   playing.   Essendon   and   Richmond,   hardly   a   mouthwatering   game.   But,   I   looked   forward   to   seeing   Richmond   play   for   the   first   time   since   the   season   begun.

After   all   the   pre-game   festivities,   the   match   finally   got   underway.   Mark   McVeigh   kicked   the   first   from   a   long   bomb,   then   Alwyn   Davey   goaled   from   a   free   kick.   Paddy   Ryder   took   a   good   mark   and   kicked   Essendon’s   third,   then   a   terrific   banana   goal   from   youngster   Ben   Howlett   saw   the   Dons   out   by   23   points.   Leroy   Jetta   kicked   a   nice   goal,   then   David   Hille   gathered   the   crumbs   of   a   pack   and   snapped   his   first,   then   Jake   Melksham   put   through   the   Bombers’   seventh   from   the   next   centre   clearance,   Essendon   led   by   41   points   and   the   match   was   over   in   my   eyes.   David   Astbury   kicked   Richmond’s   first   from   a   free   kick,   then   the   much   maligned   Shane   Tuck   kicked   a   quick   major,   and   the   margin   at   quarter   time   was   27   points,   2.4   to   7.1.

The   second   quarter   started   and   the   much   improved   Jack   Riewoldt   got   on   the   end   of   a   terrific   kick   by   Matt   White,   marking   and   goaling,   before   he   took   a   good   mark   and   put   through   his   second.   David   Zaharakis   snapped   a   goal,   then   David   Myers,   finally   making   his   stance,   gathered   and   goaled   after   some   good   work   by   Davey.   Robbie   Nahas   marked   in   a   difficult   position   on   the   forward   flank   but   was   able   to   split   the   middle,   but   Melksham   became   the   first   multiple   goalkicker   for   Essendon   after   getting   his   toe   to   the   ball   in   the   goalsquare   after   Jetta   and   Jarrod   Atkinson   combined   to   work   the   ball   forward,   and   they   led   by   29   points   at   the   main   break,   10.6   to   5.7.

The   second   half   commenced   and   Sam   Lonergan   goaled   from   25m   out   on   the   run,   before   three   behinds   were   scored   in   under   a   minute   to   Essendon.   Alex   Rance   snapped   high   towards   the   big   sticks,   but   Scott   Gumbleton   replied   with   a   great   goal   from   the   same   angle   Nahas   prevailed   from.   Michael   Hurley   goaled   to   take   the   margin   out   to   47   points,   but   Rance   kicked   his   second   from   a   free   kick.   Hille   marked   on   the   boundary   line,   45   out   from   goal.   He   casually   put   the   angled   ball   on   his   boot   and   watched   it   curve   through   the   goals   for   his   second,   and   Essendon   led   by   eight   goals.   Riewoldt   marked   and   snapped   a   good   goal   just   before   the   main   break   to   cut   the   deficit   to   41   points,   8.8   to   14.13.

The   final   term   started   and   Angus   Monfries   bobbed   up   to   kick   his   first,   but   Shane   Edwards   produced   the   goods   with   a   long   bomb.   Brent   Stanton,   quiet   for   the   whole   night,   kicked   a   goal,   and   then   Hille   put   through   his   third   in   emphatic   style.   The   impressive   but   somewhat   arrogant   Dustin   Martin   snapped   a   good   goal,   followed   by   a   good   mark   to   Riewoldt,   who   played   on   and   snapped   his   fourth.   Ben   Nason   goaled   from   40   out   and   the   margin   was   all   of   a   sudden   36   points.   Riewoldt   took   a   good   mark,   and   goaled   after   a   50m   penalty   to   reduce   the   margin   to   five   goals,   but   Ryder   put   the   lights   out   forRichmond   with   a   great   snap   with   a   dozen   players   tackling   him.   The   arrogant   and   cocky   Zaharakis   banged   through   his   second   after   he   was   left   unmarked   in   the   goalsquare,   but   Riewoldt   booted   an   equal   career-high   sixth   goal   after   yet   another   contested   mark.   I   was   really   impressed   by   Riewoldt,   for   a   couple   of   years   I   have   not   rated   him,   but   he   is   finally   coming   out   and   will   perhaps   not   be   known   as   just   Nick   Riewoldt’s   cousin   in   the   near   future.   The   siren   sounded,   ending   an   entertaining   and   high-scoring   clash   between   two   battling   sides,   19.16.130   to   14.11.95.

Richmond   are   getting   closer   and   closer   to   a   win.   They   have   the   cavalry,   but   one   thing   needs   to   be   done,   and   I   think   other Richmond   supporters   would   hold   the   same   idea.   They   need   to   drop   Tyrone   Vickery,   or   stop   playing   him   as   a   Ruckman.   Might   as   well   give   Andrew   Browne   a   go,   and   Troy   Simmonds   can’t   cut   it   at   AFL   level   anymore.   Angus   Graham   is   a   good   young   goer,   but   he   can’t   compete   in   the   Ruck   by   himself.   As   for   the   Bombers,   they   are   going   along   nicely,   but   this   performance   would   have   left   a   lot   of   Richmond   supporters   dreaming   of   that   elusive   victory.
