M.V.R.C. W.S. Cox Plate Day Almanacker Selections

I’m as mad as hell.

The reason?

I’m self-appointed president of an underground resistance movement called the Keep the Initials in the Race Names Freedom Fighters or K.T.I.I.T.R.N.F.F.

Come the spring, the K.T.I.I.T.R.N.F.F. peruse the form guide looking for those initials internalised in our pomp. Sadly we’re disappointed.

Where is the W.S. in the Cox Plate?

Where is the A.J. in the Moir Stakes (now called some fizzy drink stakes)?

Next week, where will the L.K.S. in the MacKinnon Stakes be?

Memo to race clubs:

Stuff the sponsors. Bring back the initials. And bring them back immediately!

Now back to fiscal matters.

Tips for tomorrow’s big card at Moonee Valley from our titular heads of tipsterdom are displayed below.

Dips’s Dabbles

Special guest form analyst and logician, Dips, says Helmet (No. 14) will win the W.S. Cox Plate (Race 8) because it’s the best horse, Rekindled Interest (No. 9) will come second because it’s the second best horse and King’s Rose (No. 13) will come third because it’s got the third best barrier.

Smokie’s Smokies

In the W.S. Cox Plate (Race 8), Smokie says:

1. Rekindled Interest (No. 9)

Everything seems to be going its way, from the barrier draw to the scratching of Descarado.

2. Jimmy Choux (No. 5)

Distance should not be a problem, as it has won over this journey previously.

3. Glass Harmonium (No. 4)

Cannot be discounted.

In the Moonee Valley Cup (Race 6), Smokie says Shewan (No. 5) really caught the eye last start.

In the A.J. Moir Stakes (Race 5), Smokie says there’s this thing going around called Black Caviar (No. 5) which is supposed to be ok.

Downer’s Declarations

In the W.S. Cox Plate (Race 8), Downer says he’ll be backing Rekindled Interest (No. 9) and Helmet (No. 14). The former has been shrewdly prepared for the race, loves the valley, and was ridden dead in the Turnbull. Helmet’s 3yo weight pull is enormous – although Daryl Braithwaite’s annual rendition of Horses may prove an obstacle to him relaxing.

1. Rekindled Interest (No. 9)

2. Helmet (No. 14)

3. King’s Rose (No. 13)

4. Glass Harmonium (No. 4)

Downer also likes Amah Rock (Race 3, No. 1).

Flynn’s Fancies

In the W.S. Cox Plate, Flynn says:

1. Rekindled Interest (No. 9)

2. Helmet (No. 14)

3. King’s Rose (No. 13)

4. Glass Harmonium (No. 4)

Flynn says Go The Cats (Race 1, No. 12) will show Varcoe and Wojcinski–like toe.

Harms’s Hopes

Harms says Twilighting (Race 2, No. 5), Karuta Queen (Race 3, No. 8), Manawanui (Race 4, No. 1) and Black Caviar (Race 5, No. 5) are specials.

Swooper (Race 6, No. 11) is an each way special and mega-value.

L. Nolen and D. Dunn are in the mix for the jockey’s challenge.

Comments

  1. PJ Flynn – agree about the initials.

  2. mark freeman says

Happy to report big result today Flynny. Gorilla jumped in thanks to my stable’s No. 1, the Pinker girl. Got on at $61 a month ago after the decision to go for Cox instead of Caulfield Cup. Rated her a 40-1 chance today and was surprised at her $20 tote price. Then rated her 10,000-1 at the 600m.

But every now an then you get the ‘Bradbury’ run, and the overhead told the story today – magnificent suck through along the fence while the rest fanned. But she’s nothing if not a bulldog and that’s why she’s top dog in my little stable – gets her head down and savages the line.

Of course the punt never gives you the lot – I also had half the trifecta, but my first four flexi missed by a half head. But can’t complain, I’ve got some more hairy gorillas lined up in doubles with my girl if any of Lloyd’s or L. Cranach salutes Tuesday week.

And today’s conditions reminded me of Surround’s ’76 Cox Plate. I remember cracking thunderstorms in the race lead-up, you could hear them as static on the tranny.

    cheers
    Freeza

  3. Peter Flynn says

    G’day Freeza (Makybe),

I’m listening to Roger Miller (Dang Me Dang Me). It’s late and I’m very refreshed.

Well played young fella. That is indeed good punting. Pinker Pinker won’t win too many more Gr1’s.

The 1976 W.S. Cox Plate was run in weird circumstances due to the syzygy.

The next total solar eclipse is due on Nov 14, 2012. Cairns is the go.

    Played.

    Flynn

    Cheers,

    Galileo Galilei

  4. Peter Flynn says

    PS

    Dunaden will win the Cup.

  5. Can’t remember many better rides than that by C Williams in the Gox Plate.

  6. …or many worse rides than D Dunn aboard Rekindled Interest…

  7. can’t remember too many worse rides than the one on Kings Rose. A certainty beaten. Pinker Pinker could not run her down a few weeks ago. She stays on the rail she wins easily. She waits a little longer she wins easily. As it was she was checked by the wall in front of her.

  8. Peter Flynn says

Agree with the above comments re rides.
