Local Footy: Broken Hill Lizards bust ‘bench-less’ Riverland Superdogs in trial match

by Nick Kossatch

The Riverland Superdogs over 35’s master’s football team lost their trial game against a fit, classy and skilled Broken Hill Shinglebacks side by 31 points at Lyrup Oval on Saturday.

It could have been much worse after the boys from the Silver City began sensationally with ‘silver-serviced’ deliveries to their big forwards. The hosts (who will this year thankfully play all their home games at Lyrup Oval) pegged back the lead through some centre clearances. Players like Paul ‘Weeds’ Matthews (two goals), new player Shane ‘Rambo’ Uren and the legendary Kenny ‘Rolls Royce’ Karpany fed forwards Sam ‘Lewy’ Ingerson (three goals) and Shane ‘Rowdy’ Healy who slotted through four majors in a ‘Jason ‘Porpoise’ Porplyzia-type game.

Other players who made their debuts in the most stylish and impressive fashion were centre half back Ben ‘Ben Ten’ Mueret and Ben ‘Fenno’ Fenwick. The ‘two Bens’ drove the pill out of defence repeatedly whilst Matthews continued his ‘Dog Tag’ form of last season but he wore a black eye post-match. Karpany’s 65-metre goal travelled 20 metres in the air before bouncing some 45-metres through the goals after the ‘Rowdy and Lewy Paddock’ was left vacant. This was a highlight.

The lowlight was ‘no bench’ and some Superdog players wilted in the 35-degree autumnal heat. The Riverlanders will be hopeful of more players showing up in their season opener against River Murray on Sunday, April 11th at Lyrup Oval.
