WAFL Round Nine…

If you were really negative you could say the message Subiaco sent to the other WAFL teams on Saturday was to start thinking about 2018.
The Lions made a mockery of the top-of-the-table clash and didn’t give South Fremantle a sniff. Kyal Horsley turned on the party tricks for his 150th game and kicked three goals while small forwards Liam Ryan (number 51) and Liam Baker (61) each kicked four goals – they loom as big number nightmares for opposition defences. Corey Adamson had a break-out game, Ben Sokol’s marking in attack was important and he kicked three goals, Brad Stevenson also marked well, Lachlan Delahunty was strong on the ball and Aaron Heal led the defence. Tim Kelly played beautifully for the Bulldogs and kicked two good goals and Blaine Johnson worked hard in attack.

Subiaco 19.13 (127)  South Fremantle 14.4 (88)

I was premature in my suggestion of an East Fremantle revival. The Sharks were thrashed at home by a well-stocked East Perth and now look headed for the wooden spoon… but hey it’s 2017 so who knows. Mark Hutchings was in hot form for the Royals, high draft pick Daniel Venables kicked four goals and Will Maginness was again impressive. George Hampson was outstanding for East Fremantle and Cam Eardley did his bit.

East Fremantle 7.13 (55) East Perth 20.22 (142)

At Rushton Park, ruckman Sean Darcy kicked four goals in his best game of the season in Peel’s all-the-way win over Swan Districts. Tom Sheridan won plenty of the ball and Blair Bell was effective and kicked two goals. Kirk Ugle and Todd Banfield were good for Swans.

Peel Thunder 12.12 (84) Swan Districts 9.9 (63)

Perth led all day against Claremont at Fremantle Oval, lost the lead in the last quarter and then got it back again to register their second win of the season. Cody Ninyette kicked four goals for the Demons while Devin McFarlane and Clayton Giblett were good in defence. Keifer Yu was the best of the Tigers, Alex Manuel kicked three goals and Ryan Lim continued his good form.

Claremont 11.13 (79) Perth 13.9 (87)

The ladder: Subiaco 28; South Fremantle 24; Swan Districts 20; West Perth 20; Peel 16; Claremont 12; East Perth 12; Perth 8; East Fremantle 0.

Next week: Subiaco v East Fremantle (Leederville Oval); Perth vs Peel (Lathlain Park); South Fremantle vs East Perth (Fremantle Oval); West Perth vs Claremont (Arena Joondalup).
