It isn’t rocket science

Round 7

North Melbourne versus Western Bulldogs

Footy.

It’s not rocket science, mate. It’s not bloody rocket science.

It’s pretty bloody simple.

It’s like life: do the right things, you win. If you don’t, you won’t.

If you get numbers at the contest; win the ball; pick the correct option; dispose of the ball to teammates; handball; kick; mark; knock-on; run to the ball; run with the ball; run without the ball; offer targets to teammates; push forward; push back; tackle; break tackles; shepherd; concentrate for longer; keep in the minute; not get ahead of yourself; not believe your hype; keep your head; respect your opponent; don’t wait for your opponent to make mistakes; harass your opponent; use your body; commit your body; back yourself; take risks; be honest; put a player on the mark; make a second and third effort; man up; be a loose man; put a forward in the goal square; don’t be lazy; believe; trust; hope; work harder for longer; want to win more than your opposition, you will.

Why do we still think that after 170 years of playing footy, taking short cuts will win games? Why do we keep hoping footy lore will change?

Why?

Why?

It’s pretty bloody simple, mate.

Good question Andrew. I think because some people /coaches prefer to be dreamers/sensationalists rather than practical realists.
I feel that the standard of footy has changed for the better with some of they younger coaches though . Essendon for example – are looking positive and fantastic They get the ball ,they kick it long , they move it quickly , they kick to position – all simple stuff that Hird himself did and they are playing fabulous footy .No more stuffing around going backwards and sideways. People try to re invent the wheel and bluff too often because it looks and sounds fancy. I’m with you – keep it simple and do it well- it works!!!

    Pam,

just another of my post game rants.

The Bulldogs did the right things while North were lazy and flatfooted. We waited for the Dogs to make mistakes.

    Bombers look great.

  3. A very un-Brad Scott performance… Geelong also guilty of putting in a non-Scott-brother performance.

Essendon’s high-risk game won’t stand up come finals time.

  4. Andrew Starkie says

    lazy, soft, unaccountable, reactive. crossroads.

  5. Andrew,

The honeymoon is over for B Scott. Some questionable tactics
and unfathomable selection decisions have left me scratching
my head this season. And North have, thus far, virtually had a
full list from which to choose.

With all due respect to the Bulldogs, if North can’t win these
sorts of games the finals are now an impossible dream.

Spot on SMokie. I have been questioning some selection and positional changes all season. Wright in defence? Grima, Levi and Pederson need to be brought back in. We’re missing Mcmahon’s kicking out of defence as well.

We haven’t fired a shot since the geelong game.

    AS

I had to go back to the coach’s coach, Vince Lombardi to find a couple of inspirational quotes to help you work through where you’re at with the Roos game yesterday:

“Coaches who can outline plays on a black board are a dime a dozen. The ones who win get inside their player and motivate” and “the good Lord gave you a body that can stand most anything. It’s your mind you have to convince”. Finally, “Winning is not everything – but making the effort to win is”. And, if it’s any consolation, one of the greatest speeches in modern Australian Rules footy was given by Hawthorn great, Kennedy in the 1975 GF to the losing team when he uttered the words, “Don’t think, do”.

    Cheers

  8. Brad Scott needs to go.

    Aaron Black, where are you?
