On Saturday night I caught a train home from the MCG feeling lost and despondent. I knew what the Hawks could have done better. I know that the Hawks can take it right up to the Cats. I know a free kick when I see one. And boy, I know we are going to miss Roughy. All of this I knew and I know the Hawks know (and I suspect the Cats know) but the scoreboard apparently doesn’t lie. It says that we keep on getting beaten by them.
I didn’t know how to respond to my pain and frustration and emptiness. Should I drink or break something or watch Monty Python? All reasonable options but none quite caught the mood I was in. So, I made up a mix-tape. Yes it reeks of self-pity but that’s where I was on Saturday night. This activity was cathartic and soothing. So for fun or assistance I pass it on to fellow footy travelling tragic who know too well the pitfalls of standing by your team and walking the line. Did I feel better? Bloody oath. Music will do that every time. However, I couldn’t go to bed feeling so sad and bad and blue. I needed a pick me up. A song to stoke the fires, to snap the freeze, to get me going. So I played a Clash song and I played it uncomfortably loud. I played “I’m Not Down”:

Rick. Before Melbourne Collingwood, being a Melbourne home game, we were tyreated to a couple of songs from Verses (Ella and Jesse Hooper are Melbourne supporters – and for a football match they should be called “Versus”) followed by Almanacker and Melbourne supporter David Bridie and My Friend the Chocolote Cake. They were the only wins for Melbourne for the day.
Could I offer you Heart That’s Pounding by Sally Seltmann and Your Golden Heart by Ned Collette and Wirewalker – particularly the Super Melody remix?
Andrew, Dave Bridie’s performance was so heartfelt, unlike his team. Rick, perhaps you can now add ‘Living On A Prayer’ on that play list.
But seriously, can relate. Music takes me into better realities when things aren’t going well. I was humming Lazy by Bruno Mars all day yesterday after your Facebook post. It set the tone for the day, which turned out great.
Rick – I listen to Neil Young’s “Bandit” when I feel like wallowing. He also has another song called Star of Bethlehem”. One of the lines is
“Maybe the star of Bethlehem wasn’t a star at all”
Kills all hope really.

Dips, I have Star of Bethlehem as a duo with Emmylou Harris (now there’s a voice that’ll break your heart). I love the song.
Mr Flynn, no it isn’t a cover of The Rolling Stones song and I forgot about that song (so great call). Ms Benatar’s song is influenced by an old Crystal’s song, also called Heartbreaker. Jezz, I didn’t realise how many music artists follow the Hawks.

Thanks Pamela, I’m starting to feel better because we just bought or tickets for Dolly Parton who is touring in November. Hopefully, come Septmember, when we play the Cats next I won’t be singing, “Here You Come Again”!

Rick, dunno if this fact will make you feel better or worse but today (June 24th) marks exactly 1000 days since the Hawks did the job on the Cats in the ’08 GF.
The only thing that matter today Gigs is that it’s the line in the sand day that they’re kidding about aren’t they?
I’ll know how good I feel about your fact by 10pm tonight when I’m singing the song and not lamenting another Hawk lost to a season ending injury.
