Heartaches by the Number

by Rick Kane

On Saturday night I caught a train home from the MCG feeling lost and despondent. I knew what the Hawks could have done better. I know that the Hawks can take it right up to the Cats. I know a free kick when I see one. And boy, I know we are going to miss Roughy. All of this I knew and I know the Hawks know (and I suspect the Cats know) but the scoreboard apparently doesn’t lie. It says that we keep on getting beaten by them.

I didn’t know how to respond to my pain and frustration and emptiness. Should I drink or break something or watch Monty Python? All reasonable options but none quite caught the mood I was in. So, I made up a mix-tape. Yes it reeks of self-pity but that’s where I was on Saturday night. This activity was cathartic and soothing. So for fun or assistance I pass it on to fellow footy travelling tragic who know too well the pitfalls of standing by your team and walking the line. Here is a set of songs that’ll help you get through the bleaker moments.

  1. Heartache Tonight (The Eagles)
  2. Don’t Go Breaking My Heart (Burt Bacharach)
  3. It’s a Heartache (Bonnie Tyler)
  4. Heartaches By The Number (Dwight Yoakam)
  5. Heartbreaker (Pat Benatar)
  6. Hurt’s So Bad (Little Antony and the Imperials)
  7. Take Another Little Piece of My Heart (Janis Joplin)
  8. Heartbreak Hotel (Elvis)
  9. Downhearted (Australian Crawl)

10.  This Old Heart of Mine (The Isley Brothers)

11.  Un-break My Heart (Toni Paxton)

12.  Welcome to Heartbreak (Kanye West)

13.  Tonight the Heartache’s On Me (Dixie Chicks)

Did I feel better? Bloody oath. Music will do that every time. However, I couldn’t go to bed feeling so sad and bad and blue. I needed a pick me up. A song to stoke the fires, to snap the freeze, to get me going. So I played a Clash song and I played it uncomfortably loud. I played “I’m Not Down”:

“I know there’ll be some way
I can swing everything back my way
Like skyscrapers rising up
Floor by floor, I’m not giving up

I’ve been beat up, I’ve been thrown out but I’m not down, I’m not down
I’ve been shown up, but I’ve grown up and I’m not down, I’m not down”

  1. Andrew Fithall says

Rick. Before Melbourne Collingwood, being a Melbourne home game, we were tyreated to a couple of songs from Verses (Ella and Jesse Hooper are Melbourne supporters – and for a football match they should be called “Versus”) followed by Almanacker and Melbourne supporter David Bridie and My Friend the Chocolote Cake. They were the only wins for Melbourne for the day.

Could I offer you Heart That’s Pounding by Sally Seltmann and Your Golden Heart by Ned Collette and Wirewalker – particularly the Super Melody remix?

  2. Phil Dimitriadis says

Andrew, Dave Bridie’s performance was so heartfelt, unlike his team. Rick, perhaps you can now add ‘Living On A Prayer’ on that play list.

But seriously, can relate. Music takes me into better realities when things aren’t going well. I was humming Lazy by Bruno Mars all day yesterday after your Facebook post. It set the tone for the day, which turned out great.

  3. Rick – I listen to Neil Young’s “Bandit” when I feel like wallowing. He also has another song called Star of Bethlehem”. One of the lines is

“Maybe the star of Bethlehem wasn’t a star at all”

    Kills all hope really.

  4. Peter Flynn says

    R Kane,

Did you miss another Bonnie tune?

Is P Benatar a cover of side 1 on Goat’s Head Soup?

  5. Freddo says Reeeebittt Rick.

  6. “Aint it sad when you wake up in the morning,
And you find that those other days are gone,
All you have are memories of happiness,
    Lingering on.”

    Pass the tissues please.

  7. Rick Kane says

Thank you for all the great suggestions so I can continue wallowing in the blues.

Dips, I have Star of Bethlehem as a duo with Emmylou Harris (now there’s a voice that’ll break your heart). I love the song.

Mr Flynn, no it isn’t a cover of The Rolling Stones song and I forgot about that song (so great call). Ms Benatar’s song is influenced by an old Crystal’s song, also called Heartbreaker. Jezz, I didn’t realise how many music artists follow the Hawks.

    Cheers

  8. Richard Naco says

    Nah.

It has to be Chumbawamba with “I Get Knocked Down”, which starts thus:

    “We’ll be singing
    When we’re winning
    We’ll be singing

    2x
    I get knocked down
    But I get up again
You’re never going to keep me down”

  9. Rick Kane says

Good call Richard, I’ll bear that one in mind

  10. Mulcaster says

ït’s a game “the Bay City Rollers?

  11. Richard Naco says

Since I made my post above, I’ve been wondering if 2x is XXXX Lite.

  12. Pamela Sherpa says

Isn’t music wonderful? There’s a tune for every mood. I took up gardening over summer at the frustration of the cricket- brilliant therapy
Enjoy singing joyously when the Hawks win again Rick

  13. Rick Kane says

Thanks Pamela, I’m starting to feel better because we just bought or tickets for Dolly Parton who is touring in November. Hopefully, come Septmember, when we play the Cats next I won’t be singing, “Here You Come Again”!

  14. Peter Flynn says

    Jolene.

    Jolene.

    Jolene.

    Joleeeene.

  15. Hawks will never win again

  16. Rick Kane says

It’s one thing to say we’ll never win again Mr Les, but more importantly, give me a song I can listen to through the long winters of your damning prediction. Cough up the song buddy.

  17. Richard Naco says

I’d guess that song would be Pretty Vacant by the Sex Pistols, Rick.

    ;)

  18. Rick Kane says

Good call Richard and not just because it has stayed in my Top 10 songs for about 35 years now. I would have gone for the REM song, “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (and I feel fine)” :)

  19. Les would do a good Kerry Packer impersonation.

  20. Matt Quartermaine says

Rick and all you Hawks followers:
    “Don’t Bring Me Down” ELO
“AmI Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?” Angels (Live with appropriate crowd response)

  21. Matt, I believe Don’t Bring Me Down has already become popular this year with a lot of Hawks fans, with crowds being heard singing “Dont bring me down, Breust!”

  22. Richard Naco says

    Giga shoots …

    GIGS SCORES!

  23. Sensational

  24. 23 replies and no one has suggested ‘Achy Breaky Heart’? Shameful…

  25. Richard Naco says

Gus: we, as a group, do have some standards.

And they may be low, but they’re not that low.

    ;)

  26. Rick Kane says

Hear, hear Naco. Gus, when I compiled my list I deliberately left ABH out of the mix. I was going for song of depth and real meaning. Cheers

  27. Rick, dunno if this fact will make you feel better or worse but today (June 24th) marks exactly 1000 days since the Hawks did the job on the Cats in the ’08 GF.

  28. Rick Kane says

The only thing that matter today Gigs is that it’s the line in the sand day that they’re kidding about aren’t they?

I’ll know how good I feel about your fact by 10pm tonight when I’m singing the song and not lamenting another Hawk lost to a season ending injury.

    Cheers

However the chips fall I can’t feel too bad as Gillian Welch and Dolly Parton both have new records coming out.

  29. Andrew Fithall says

Gillian – definitely. Predictions of a tour in January. I’m there. Dolly? You are on your own Rick. BTW – just been offered a free ticket to Wagons at the Forum. Woo hooo.
