AFL Grand Final 2016

It was October the 1st – Grand Final Day. Before the game Vance Joy, The Living End and Sting played.

1st Quarter

RRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!! This was it. The 2016 AFL Grand Final was under way. The ball was bounced on the dewy ground of the MCG as a huge cheer erupted from the crowd. It took almost 10 minutes for either team to score. The first goal was kicked by Kieren Jack after a miss by Luke Parker. Buddy went into the rooms with a rolled ankle after he had leapt for a mark and landed on his team-mate’s foot.

2nd Quarter

With the Bulldogs leading by 4 points the Doggies kicked another to start the 2nd. The Swans then came back into the match to lead by 3 points at the main break.

3rd Quarter

The 3rd Quarter was pretty even. The Bulldogs ended up with a 3 point lead at 3 quarter time and won the ball through the middle in the last 5 minutes but ended with a disappointing 4 behinds to finish the premiership quarter.

4th Quarter

This was it. The last and biggest quarter of the year of the last and biggest game of the year. It was game on. For the first fifteen minutes of the last quarter it was Swans goal, Dogs goal, Swans goal, Dogs goal until the Dogs kicked their second in a row with 10 minutes left in the game and then booted 2 more to seal the game for the Dogs including a big Tom Boyd goal after a tackle on Buddy. He then nailed it from 75 metres.

The Bulldogs had done it. The Doggies had won their 2nd premiership over a drought of 62 years in their 3rd Grand Final with a record breaking 55 year drought. The players couldn’t believe it when the siren sounded. The Norm Smith medal was awarded to Jason Johanissen who played greatly as he did in the Round 15 clash kicking a 50 metre goal to give the Doggies a 4 point lead with only seconds left on the clock. Bevo gave his medal to their injured captain, Bob Murphy. The medal was returned later that week.  Every player was loving the lap of honour with players diving onto the confetti-filled ground and Bob Murphy showing his jumper which was under his tracksuit. The Doggies came back onto the oval still with their full uniform on. The Doggies sang the song as loudly as ever.

Great stuff Joseph! You have been able to summarise each quarter of the great match. It seemed to be over too quickly for us Bulldog supporters, although the last five minutes dragged on a bit while we held our breath hoping the Swans wouldn’t find a way to win.

I finally got round to watching a full replay this morning, with an old Footscray mate – god it was good.
