  1. One of the all-time great stories.

This should happen in all sports.

    Brilliant.

  2. Andrew Starkie says

Great story. Must sit infront of B Scott next year.

  3. If this was the caper, we’d get the chance to show how poor old mate Hughes and old mate Khawaja really are.

  4. Malcolm Ashwood says

Entertaining read certainly the Fairytale and as a Supporter of QPR who
Harry Redknapp Is now Manager of makes him more appealing I wish the Goal had not been disallowed Steve Seems like a Good Bloke and a huge West Ham Fan
Variations of this sporting dream I am sure all fellow almanackers have had !

  5. Great yarn. The sting in the tale makes it all the more poignant.
Howler Magazine looks brilliant production quality. The Guardian picked it up from a fanzine. Old media relying on passionate outsiders for their stories – what’s new?

  6. Earl O'Neill says

    Great tale!

  7. Dave Goodwin says

How classic is the anecdote about the 2 mates both named Steve married to wives both named Kelly? “My first wife was called Kelly, and Chunk’s missus was also called Kelly, and they got pregnant at exactly the same time.” The Steves and their Kellys once drove 230 miles to Torquay to watch West Ham play when the Kellys were five months pregnant. “Every five miles we had to stop for them to be sick at the side of the road,” Steve says. “We nearly missed the kick-off.”

Fantastic yarn- not an unbelievable fairytale, but one starring a very real character. Of course he was a courier from Milton Keynes! His cockney humour and language is wonderful.
