Fearless Round 10: National Reconciliation Week. Where to begin? Footy!
BYE Port Adelaide and Gold Coast Suns – it’s a long road trip back home from China.
Goodbye Etihad, Welcome Marvel Stadium – a new era in footy and leisure marketing…ka-ching! Meanwhile, parents’ pockets everywhere just get lighter!
Marvel’s Magpies might yet turn Bucks into a finals coach. His team reeled in a 25pt ¼ time lead by the Bulldogs to run out 35pt winners. The Dogs basically stopped. 0.4 in the 2nd half – ain’t gonna win you much. Bevos Bullies sat, rolled over and played dead. Treloar brought his own ball 40,2.2. Phillips 36. Bucks’ beard looks like Dr Zaius.
The Saints led the Tigers well into the 3rd qtr at the G on Saturday. Kudos to Saints for that, but Carlisle’s hit on Jumping Jack rendered the Tigers forwardline temporarily impotent. Enter Josh Caddy with 6 goals to fix the problem. Dusty managed a couple and Cotch chipped in to restore the Tigers’ final qtr charge by 28pts. Ross, Steven 30+.
Sydney Swans migrated north to the greasy Gabba to take on the Zorko-led Lions. Much has been made of the Lions’ heading in the right direction and typical of the charge was ex-Skipper Beams and the AFL’s equivalent of Vyvyan from The Young Ones, Mitch Robinson. Swans had enough to get the job done by 18pts. 3 cygnets x3.
The Cats wore the Indigenous jumper to host the Blues on Saturday night at the Cattery, aka GMHBA Cameron Ling Stadium. The forgotten Cat Black got a recall and was serviceable as the Cats struggled with the Blues and their star-studded profile equally. A dusty 22pt win over an inaccurate Blues, soured by a broken leg to cult hero E-Sav.
An 8pt game at Spotless between the GWS and Essendon saw Jake Stringer return to the scene of his greatest glory, securing a Bulldogs GF berth in 2016. The ex-Dog-Don kicked 3, including 2 in the last, taking a 5pt 3 /4 time lead to a 35pt win. GWS officially are on the nose at present. Talent there as are injuries…but attitude? Is Don Is Better.
The high-flying Eagles came to Melbourne to take on Hawthorn at Etihad on Sunday, knowing their reputation for games outside WA was still in question. So, a 15pt win against a fellow finals-aspirant came at a timely moment. Gaff continues his stellar year with 35. O’Meara 3, Kennedy 3. Simmo’s Eagles shaping up well at the top of the tree.
The Red Centre hosted what many regarded as the game of the round, the Jake Lever Cup. The result was not what most expected however. 91pt win by Melbourne affirming their potential led by the ex-Crow. He was met with death-stares from his ex-Crow teammates. Coach Pyke served the death-stares at his players after they failed to fire.
Rain mitigates having never played on an AFL ground before. So, it was when the Roos were challenged by Freo in WA late in the last qtr. A total howler–Jacobs overthrowing Hamling- was overlooked and killed any Freo momentum – cutting a 16pt lead to 3pts in the wet. Roos steadied thru Atley/ less errors in the wet by 28pts. Fyfe 31. Waite 3.
