FEARLESS 2019 – Round 16: Saints in 15th and still only 2 games and % out of the 8!!

The Hawks and the Pies kicked off the Round. Unbeknownst to many, the Hawks had the wood over the Woods with 12 wins out of the last 13 games. The game was headed towards a Magpie win at 3 /4 time before the Hawks stormed home in the last to snatch a well-earned 4pt win. Hawks snap losing streak in McEvoy and Breust’s 200thgame.

Essendon and Sydney played surprisingly at the MCG, an 8pt game regardless; both teams capable of finals and winning form. So why such a scrappy game? Defensively-minded tactics don’t get crowds thru the gate, nor does erratic forward entries, of which both teams were guilty. Bombers overcame Swans challenge by 10pts. Zaka 3. JK 35.

Gold Coast has really lost momentum, but their side isn’t that bad. 10 losses in a row mightn’t suggest as such, nor maybe a Richmond lead of 14 goals at ½ time but there are a few players that Dew can get in to boost the squad. Recruiting, not priority picks. George Costanza kicked 5 and the Tigers by 92pts. Swallow and Witts good for Suns.

Adelaide-Port clashes bring the state of South Australia to a standstill. Unfortunately for the Crows that standstill was contagious and infected them after 1 /2 time. Port’s yo-yo season continued with an electric 2nd half that suggests Elon Musk’s battery works very well. Robbie Gray vintage as was Rockliff. Crowmojoslow. Port by 57pts.

Having smashed the Cats hoodoo in 2018, the Dogs took on the Cats at Marvel under the Saturday Night roof so no rain. A fast track suggested a scoreline of 71-55 was stymied by defensive tactics. The Cats for the most part until the Dogs 5.4 last qtr to 1.2. Aaron Naughton kicked 4 and proved matchwinner. Cats wayward. Dogs better.

2.19 looks like a scoreline from country footy, not AFL. That Fremantle could only manage that was amazing. Granted it was very wet, but the Dockers are a capable team. West Coast had Nic Nat Noo back and dominating and young Jarrad Cameron kicked 4. There are no excuses. Bad kicking is bad footy from U8s up. Eagles derby by 91pts.

Carlton hosted Melbourne on Sunday at the MCG and this game could be viewed as the one that got away for the Blues or the game that kick-started Melbourne’s season. When Jaidyn Hunt’s goal went thru, the Dees had barely withstood a fierce Carlton comeback from 5 goals down. Had McGovern’s kick not hit the post…? Dees by 5pts.

North returned to Blundstone Arena for the 3rd time, having not yet won there in 2019. St. Kilda returned to Hobart for the 1st time in 3 years. The question is why did they turn up at qtr time? A 40pt Roos lead led to a 39pt Roos win. The Saints stormed back thru Josh Bruce with 6 to within 15pts. Zurhaar, Larkey 5 each…AFL’s day-nighter.

Brisbane travelled to Rooty Hill daring to unseat the GWS Emperor and steal the Ferrari. Such upstarts dare to dream. To achieve the dream is a testament to Coach Fagan’s mastery of his Lions. Leading all day, Brisbane unseated their highly fancied rivals from the top 4, winning by 20pts. Legitimacy for Lions…and maybe finals also.
