Fearless 2019 Round 9: Footy is a week to weak proposition – anything can happen

Impressive wasn’t the word I’d think I would use to describe Melbourne’s performance in Perth against the Eagles. Ad nauseum reminders of what happened the last time the Dees went to Perth must’ve stuck in their collective craw. The Dees close to pulling off an upset. More impressive was Flyin Ryan’s speccy over Max Gawn. WCE 16pts.

Likewise, I’d say the Pies powered away from the Saints in the last after the Saints hit the front early in the 3rd qtr. A 41pt win not indicative of the Saints’ efforts, more a reflection on the Pies’ ability to put on the afterburners. The forgotten man Ben Reid chipped in with 3 as Skunk Membrey and Pie Mihocek 4 each. Treloar 38 drove Pies.

Adelaide flew to the Gabbatoir to take on the much improved Lions. Similarly, the Crows had improved in season 2019. The Lions had the game in their grasp for the most part, leading by 27pts in the last qtr. Enter Eddie Betts with 2 goals and the Crows were back in it. Lachie Neale at home 39 stats – Brownlow favourite. Cameron 3.5 ouch!

The Dogs hadn’t won at Geelong since 2003 and continued that trend, losing by 44pts. Like Collingwood, Geelong overcame competitive opposition before blowing them away. 1.2 to 6.1 in the last and the Doggies couldn’t keep pace. Tomahawk 4 and Gary Rohan 3, in his best year yet. Cat Ryan Fort on debut 3 goals – was on Dogs list..ouch!

A final score of 60:53 under the roof at Etihad between the Dons and Dockers. Dons led by 26pts in the last before Walters, Hogan and Matera goaled to bring the margin closer. The defensive nature of the game still allowed freedom for Walla to kick 3. At the other end Jesse Hogan 1.4. Dylan Shiel great 2 goals, 25 stats. Don Josh Begley 0.4

Cygnets, or baby Swans, flew south to the pre-winter chills of Hobart to take on the Roos. Captain Kennedy a last minute withdrawal. No worries, any fears allayed by a game winning 7 goal 2nd qtr, where the Roos’ mistakes marred their usually tight fortress. Papley ran amok with 4, before Roos nearly pinched it. Swans 5pts. Deserved.

For the first time in a while, Port played Gold Coast in Adelaide and not China. Rain marred the contest but didn’t stop the Suns getting off to a solid start, a 4pt lead at 1/ 2 time. Port’s Frampton came alive with 3 goals and debutant Joel Garner (not 6’7” West Indian) finished with the ball after the indefatigable Boak triggered Port to a 38pt win.

The Dusty Show returned to the G on Sunday after a well-earned break. Dustin Martin had 37 stats and kicked 2.2 and the Hawks could just watch the traffic. Supported by Ellis and Houli with 35 stats, Dusty turned back the clock with Caddy and Lynch up forward 3 each. Breust 3.2 kept Hawks in it but a solid 6 goal Tiger win was emphatic.

Carlton headed to Giants Stadium, facing GWS on the rebound. It says as much for the Giants that they had to pick on the bottom side, after the MCG debacle the week before. The big big sound from the west of the town was the scoreboard ticking over en route to the big 93 pt win. GWS go back to the MCG. Finlayson 5. Blues better than that.
