FEARLESS 2019 Round 5 – Festival of footy Part Two

It’s all about Eddie…and why not?

Dayne Beams, Prodigal Lion, returns to the Gabba as a Magpie. If that’s confusing, what made it moreso was that nobody foresaw it either. What wasn’t confusing was Collingwood’s dominance, led by Treloar and Grundy. Treloar’s job collecting 35 stats whilst limiting Lion gun Neale to 24 was no mean feat. The young Lions were off again. Pies 62pts, Mihocek 4.

Good Friday it was, but it certainly wasn’t that for the Roos. Rather than a crucification, it was more roadkill against the Bombers. The game for the Bombers showed they play an exciting brand of footy and even the sight of Joe Daniher didn’t throw the Dons. $20K – who cares? O-Razio 4. Roos 7.16…the glare fatal. If 1.6 was 6.1…then maybe…

A paradox is possible – Port beating West Coast in Perth by 7 goals with the reigning Premiers never in the lead. Same conditions, same number of players, same venue and yet look what happened. General consensus is that Port mastered the conditions better, preventing intercept marking with wet weather skills and playing it lower to the ground.

Yet again the paradox… A five-hour flight into hostile neutral territory of the mango and charcoal army and Freo revived Ross Lyon’s mantra of “we’ll play them in the carpark if we must”. A sunny Canberra saw the upset of 2019. Nat Fyfe underlining his status as he led Freo to a solid four goal win over an “off” GWS. Matera, J. Cameron 4.

Easter a time for the Saints and a time for the banishment of the Demons. That was the script at the MCG on Saturday and the script followed to the letter. Many have accused the Dees of getting ahead of themselves. Coach Goody said, as did Derm on Fox..the downhill skier gets a rebirth. For Saints 2018 is history, a 40pt win. Tim the Skunk 4.

Richmond hosted Sydney at Marvel…wait? What? Yes, Marvel. Dusty was back and the Tigers were well led by Shane Edwards, aka the 5th musketeer. Sydney struggles are well documented, despite the best efforts of Lloyd 37, Z Jones 32 and Buddy 4. The well-oiled machine at Tigerland registers another win by 22pts. Dusty 25, 3 goals.

Everything was awesome for the Blues faithful on Easter Sunday against the Bulldogs. After a dry spell for Carlton, a win. Not just a win, but a win by 44pts against reasonable opposition. The Dogs had glimpses so far in 2019, but coach Bevo might have to apply the blowtorch. Brendan Bolton won’t care, for the relief overrides. Cripps 37, SPS 35.

The Re-Risen Suns of the Gold Coast sky made the trek to Adelaide for Eddie’s 300th. And that was where it endeth! Eddie Betts, prodigal SA son and Blue turned Crow duly saluted the sense of occasion with 6. His teammates assisted to give Betts a night to remember, a win by 73pts. Whilst not orange, it was almost the return of Suns witches’ hats days.

Hawks-Cats’ clashes of Easter Monday at the MCG rarely fail to please. This time the Cats entered in slightly better form and the Hawks had suddenly had some injuries. That didn’t stop Ricky Henderson trying to inspire Hawk teammates with 33 stats and 2 goals. But Geelong was too good, led by Gazza, by 23pts and for that we boo…?

Mango and charcoal is a new one Paul. I’m very new to this but it resonates.
