Crio’s racing

Last weekend we had the Winter Finals meeting at Flemington and this Saturday Caulfield hosts the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes before Sandown’s GN Hurdle card Sunday. You can’t sugar coat it…the meetings are all interesting but, it is fair to say, here is a hiatus after which we start to look forward to the better horses returning and speculating on the riches ahead.

The Monash has been a pretty good race at times – Reward For Effort, from memory, came back in it – and the MRC must be delighted with the quantity and the quality of acceptors for the 2012 edition. Interest and publicity will surround the return of Green Birdie, a seriously good International sprinter (a Gr1 win over Rocket Man!) since leaving Australia back when he took on stars like Miss Andretti and Apache Cat. He’s 8 now and drawn 17 but adds intrigue. Eagle Falls is another Gr1 winner resuming and, though Caulfield and fresh are his forte, punters will be wary of this teaser and also the stable – Hayes horses just don’t win. The main bets will come for the emerging horses, but it would be wise to show caution on a Heavy track as some of these have long campaigns ahead and won’t want to be flattened. Moody’s horses are bomb proof again and Le Societe (16), who swims, will be the rage, whilst a big query will hover over Mick Price’s well performed WA recruit Night War (14) who must be well regarded to be thrown straight in here. I’m a fan of Mister Milton (33/1) and would also include Second Effort and even Grand Britannia (66/1) in exotics.
Once again we find Newitt and Nolen locked together in the battle for the Melbourne Jockey Premiership so their tussle will be one for pub watchers to follow.
My Quaddy numbers are 1,6 (10 @ 50/1 in tris)/ 4,16 (throw in 8+9)/ 1,2,4(tough)/raffle the last, 14/2 on a bog/even CD’s Mr Griswold/10.
No time tonight for study but pretty sure that we’ll be looking for wet trackers and getting out wide as the meeting goes on. Those still involved later in the day might want to tune in to BR8, in which “Bush star” Bradbury Chocolate, an $800 birthday present, confronts a bad gate, a wet track and city class as she pushes for 7 straight. Four of those wins were at non –TABs but we’ll cheer for a Cinderella story, appropriately by Bradbury’s Luck! Here’s a link to the tale.

Sunday, needless to say, will be a Heavy track at Sandown.
I’m there for both meetings and looking for tips to supplement my wages!
Good luck!

  1. The Goolwa boys are on their way to Melbourne. Ex SA jock David Whitney has Disquiet in R8 (a noted wet tracker ) and Dennis OLeary has Valuabelle in R5. There will be a beer at the Stables Sunday night if either salute Graham Line (another ex Jock and travelling companion) told me.
Where did you find out about Bradbury Star Crio?Never heard of it before

  2. I fluked over the Bradbury chocolate story whilst trawling for something else. It’s a great battler’s bush to city tale isn’t it? Hope she goes well.
I got in to the form later last night earmarking mudlarks.
I reckon Melbourne punting this weekend should just be trifecta nibbles throwing in swimmers for value.
    I’ll highlight some later.

  3. Sunday at Sandown
    R5 No6 Startum filly, Graceland at 8/1
R6 No9 Love a winner on a Tassie Heavy…that’s usually bottomless. Steer it home Froggy.

  4. I’m curious how Secret Flier performs. He won this race last year, and though has struggled since, has that win to consider. Hopefully runs well.

I’ll look at Sandown on Sunday, and see how those two perform.

    Glen!

  5. more wet trackers to put in trifectas on breeding….
the Clangalangs are swimmers. Lekedro (Sat MR8, No8) has place claims at big odds.
Loot ‘n Run will fill a place in Race 7 (by Dash For Cash)

  6. Skip of Skipton says

Still plugging for Mister Milton I see, crio. You’re as bad as those Phelan Ready spruikers.

  7. ha ha Skip. I’m not a serial recidivist…never thought I’d favour anything involving Norman Waymouth after watching him have his toes tied in to Rancher’s irons and hanging on for dear life – but some horses manage to overcome humans. Good horse.
    Now, regarding Phelan Ready!!!

  8. If it rains, rains, rains, as forecast, there’s aMossman in the last at Sandown. They usually love it.

  9. Captain Crio salutes with Bradbury Chocolate

  10. What a run! I wouldn’t have backed her with your money mate but I cheered her home. Could be fun watching another bush champ…I feel a crio’s Q? coming on!

  11. Yes saw Bradbury Chooclate fly home,I was suprised it was so short priced, but a great winning streak.

    Glen!

    The late late international report…

Have still been keeping an eye on UK racing as their summer (or lack thereof) rolls on.

With a view to our Cups and the likely “strongest invasion yet”, I’ve been tweeting about a couple of fancies over the weekend.

Gatewood, who I mentioned here a few weeks prior to Ascot (and subsequently won there), last week became part of S.O’Donnell’s OTI mob, so is now definitely being aimed at the Cup. He shot to $17 equal favourite with sportsbet.com.au, but I managed to take the $51 on TAB Sportsbet on the weekend. Should still be available.

The other one I’ve been keen on for a while is Mount Athos – was mentioned as a potential Melb Cup style horse on a Timeform podcast some months ago which perked my interest, and I looked at some tapes. It won impressively again at York over 2800m on Saturday night, the Cup is now a definite aim. Hasn’t run in the greatest of class yet, so should be lightly weighted, but hopefully enough to get in the field. Won with 63.5 the other night. Best price around town is $51 with Waterhouse. Not even listed in some markets, but I notice Mick Lynch mentioned him in The Age today, so expect that to change.

Ortensia and Sepoy came a cropper on what appeared to be H11 or H12 going in the July Cup.

    DD

  13. Thanks DD. I could not believe the plunge on Sepoy. He is gone…”only chance he has of being first past the post is in the belly of a greyhound”, claimed a pundit at Sandown Sunday. Seriously Heavy track.
What about the York meeting? Massive crowd and K. Fallon was “the man” when I was switched on.
Take some Cups doubles DD, spend $100 and we’ll sell shares of $5 each…will fill it easily.
Look fwd to catching up soon (though I’m off to Darwin Cup in a fortnight!)
