Crio’s Question: A change at the top

Wilbur Minson is carrying the Tricolours’ ruck on his colossal frame – the same Big Will who, derided by his previous coach as the dumbest smart bloke he’d ever met, was nearly on the scrapheap.
Sometimes a change of coach can make a difference. Neither is necessarily at fault.
Horses, too, have been known to improve when moved between stables (though admittedly there are sometimes deeper suspicions there!).
What movements have led to dramatic form overhauls?

    Crio,
Mediocre players turned into match winners like Earl Spalding at Carlton,Ted Richards and Josh Kennedy from the Swans.
And trying to remember, did Wayne Walters have Campaign King and maybe Special? before they went to Hayes and Cummings too lazy too google!

  2. Les Theodore had both Campaign King and Better Loosen Up.

  3. I think Better Loosen Up had a campaign with Bart and Campaign King had another trainer or two, Honeychurch??
Another that comes to mind is Undue, a cast off from Inghams went and won an Oakleigh Plate and Doomben 10000. I think I heard Snowden say in an interview when Hawkes was training that of all their cast off’s Undue was the only one that ever won at Group 1 level.

Adam Gilchrist moving from bit part player at NSW to full time keeper at WA.

  5. Peter Bell – Neesham didn’t want him and he won 2 flags at the Roos under Pagan. Ditto Winston Abraham and James Clement – rejects at Freo who starred under different management.
Martin Pike – B&F at Fitzroy in their final year 96;GF in 98 and then Flag at North in 99 and 3 at Brisbane under Matthews.
Andrew Krakouer – Richmond, slammer, 2010 – Sandover Medal and Swan Districts flag and Simpson Medal for BOG, GF at Collingwood in 2011.
Fraser Gehrig was probably Eagles best castoff. Lost interest over here after a promising start. Won 2 Coleman Medals with Saints.
In harness racing I can recall Chris Gleeson and Justin Warwick winning Grand Circuit races with modest castoffs from other stables – hmmm. “Change of surroundings” covers a multitude of sins.
Wayne Walters mentioned above trained 2 very good gallopers in the 70’s – Torbreck who landed a huge plonk at its first start; and Astrolin a good middle distance horse. He trained for some very big punters/bookies – then fell foul of stewards over the 1980 Ararat Cup boat race for the same connections. Got off in the end, but I don’t recall him having a good horse since then. Passing strange methinks.

  6. PB – what about Andrew McLeod!

‘Neighbours; – one year (170 episodes) on Seven, now in it’s 28th year (approaching 6,500 episodes) on Ten. All despite the network having to build replica sets when it took over production after Seven destroyed the original sets to prevent Ten obtaining them.
