Cracking weekend of footy and sport coming up

Almanackers, we’re in for some cracking games of footy this weekend, and all things sport!

After Round 2, four teams remain undefeated, four have yet to win a game, and the rest have one win apiece. Even at this early stage of the season it is clear, vying for a position in the eight is becoming very competitive.

Carlton and Collingwood both with zero wins will be desperate to get a win on the board, one of them tonight will be zip wins after three rounds. Collingwood fans will find this intolerable and howling for Buckley’s scalp if it’s them!

Melbourne, with huge expectations of success on their shoulders cannot afford to drop too many matches early in the season. If they do, their supporters will be baying for blood. One wonders if there are some jitters within the team as talk of players failing to fulfil their potential, or playing below par prevails. This must affect team performance. The Dees can overturn this negativity with a convincing result. North will be confident after last week’s win.

Are the Suns the real thing? At home to Freo, we will soon find out!

The Swans will be disappointed after last week’s showing and will be keen to prove they are the rightful kings of the Harbourside City. Top of the ladder GWS will be determined to remain on top with three wins.

Richmond and the Hawks on Sunday should be a cracker. The Hawks have started the season in fine form, and with Tom Mitchell in Brownlow Medal winning form they will be keen to maintain their ascendency again as a top team. Another loss by the Tigers and questions will begin to be asked.

Again, this round will be a tipster’s nightmare. Results could go either way in most matches, highlighting the evenness of the competition.

After a fab opening ceremony, competition has commenced in The Commonwealth Games, and like most Aussies our expectations are high for gold, especially for our swimmers in the pool. Many of us will be glued to the TV over the next week or so cheering our athletes on.

The disastrous Test Cricket Series in South Africa is finally over, much to the relief of all. An interesting few months lay ahead for the Aussies as the team and their supporters come to grips with the fallout of the ball tampering fiasco. Obviously, huge changes will be made to the team, the personnel, and the administration, and it will be interesting to see the future directions Australian cricket will take. It’s hard to fathom but only a short time ago our team was on top of the world. How quickly things have changed!

It’s been a corker of a week for The Footy Almanac. Some terrific posts and comments, especially about Brent Crosswell have provided an environment of stimulating and thought provoking reading about this articulate, knowledgeable, and enigmatic footballer. If you haven’t done so yet, do yourself a favour and read the posts, you won’t be sorry.

Rulebook has posted another classic about South Australian sporting greats, this time, former Australian cricketer, Wayne Phillips who made 159 on debut. Another must read article.
