At just under 600 pages this much anticipated fourth volume of Mark Pennings’ acclaimed Origins of Australian Football series covers the period from 1891 to 1896 in meticulous detail. It was an era when Essendon became a football power and the Collingwood Football Club was founded. But many clubs struggled financially throughout the 1890s depression, with decreasing attendances and star players heading to Western Australia for the mining boom. The crisis led wealthier clubs to form a new football League.
