This, the fifth and culminating volume of Mark Pennings’ Origins of Australian Football series, contains extensive records for every senior Victorian club that competed during the 1858-1896 period – including current AFL clubs Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Brisbane Lions (Fitzroy), Western Bulldogs (Footscray), Geelong, Melbourne, North Melbourne (Hotham), Richmond, St Kilda and Sydney (Albert Park/South Melbourne). The volume also contains a record of Victoria’s inter-colonial games and its players.

It contains an extensive list of the 7,000 men who played senior football during this time, noting each players statistics for their respective club/s. Mark Pennings also composed a “team of the nineteenth century” through which he describes the career details of 20 of the era’s greatest players. This volume is a boon for genealogists, historical societies and football club historians who want to discover the names of players upon which their clubs were founded, and accounts of these clubs’ statistical performance in the pre-VFL era. Pennings’ authoritative series had brought what was previously thought of as the “missing years” of Australian football history to light.
