Book Launch – Balancing Acts: Women in Sport (11th of May)

Greetings Almanackers,

I just wanted to share with you all this new book that is coming out on Wednesday through Brow Books that I, and a few familiar writers to the Almanac community, have essays in.

‘Balancing Acts: Women in Sport– Essays on power, performance, bodies and love’

The book is a collection of non-fiction pieces from more than 20 contributors that explores women’s range of experiences with sport and sporting culture in Australia.

The book will be in all good bookstores from Wednesday May 2 but if you order online through The Lifted Brow shopthis week and enter the code MOTHERLUCKER at the check-out, you can get 15% off the cover price!

The pieces in the book take literary, historical, narrative, critical, experimental and personal approaches to their subject matter, as well as several that make use of reportage and interviews. Topics include:

  • the sexualisation of women in surfing culture;
  • the marginalisation of women in boxing;
  • feminine performativity in ballet;
  • life as an AFL spectator;
  • structural disadvantage as experienced by a cyclist;
  • social soccer’s ins and outs;
  • the power relations between female athletes and coaches;
  • female-identifying athletes’ experience of homophobia;
  • the aesthetics of televised sports.

My essay builds on my journey in finding a place as a new fan to AFLW and the experiences I’ve had in that space, much of which has come from my role as Women’s Footy Editor here at the Almanac which has been so rewarding.

I also have been given the opportunity to be part of the formal launch of the book on Friday May 11, 6.30pm at Readings in Carlton.

Myself along with excellent writers, Kirby Fenwick, Nicole Hayes, Jodi McAlister and Savannah Indigo will be sharing pieces on our ‘favourite moment in sport’ to celebrate the release of the book and build on its themes. It will be a great night for sports writing enthusiasts and I hope to see some of you there!

Thanks for your support,
