AT THE FOOTY…this weekend

by Chris Riordan

The advent of billion dollar television rights has changed AFL fixturing forever. Increasingly it is becoming a TV supported competition. If you want to get to your team’s games, you need to be very flexible with your weekend schedules.

We do otherwise – finding a timeslot that suits us and then looking for a game that fits. With a dearth of default Sat’dy arvo MCG matches, we’ve consequently had some great local footy outings – a tight finish at sunbaked Abers as they snatched a win over Oak Park and then, last week, Port’s flogging of Willy in the bog. Good options abound and we want to provide a forum for finding them.

Doutta Stars tackle Oak Park this Saturday as both EDFL sides (2W,3L)strive to stay in touch with the pacesetters. Free admission at Buckley Park.

The WRFL is another suburban comp – formerly the rugged FDFL – in which the traditional stalwarts feel under siege from cashed up and kids aplenty “Delfinesque” developments as the metropolitan area expands. A classic example is this Saturday’s game at J L Murphy Reserve between Port Colts and Hoppers Crossing .

The EFL boasts this weekend’s suburban blockbuster as unbeaten sides East Ringwood and Blackburn vie for early flag favoritism.

With racing commitments dictating my attendance options, I’ll try to get to the nowadays pleasant Windy Hill for Sunday’s VFL battle between the Bombers and Gary Ayers’ rampaging Borough.

As luck would have it, my Western Bulldogs play a twilight Sunday TV game from Perth which I can grab at the Laurel’s Sports Bar on my way back down Mt Alexander Rd.

This weekend I can have my cake and eat it too!

Enjoy the footy.

  1. As always, some great clashes in the Goulburn Valley League – where the standard is exceptionally high with the catering and atmosphere to match! – as attested in previous posts on this site.
Here’s the draw for this round:

    Rochester v Euroa

    Seymour v Mansfield

    Tatura v Shepparton Swans

    Benalla v Mooroopna

Kyabram v Echuca (Saturday afternoon & evening)

    Shepparton United v Shepparton (Sunday)

It will be an emotional weekend at GVFL footy following last weekend’s passing of Barry Connolly. Rather than do him an injustice, I urge all to cut and paste the link and read the wonderful obit.

  2. Chalkdog says

thought I would give local footy s go Crio.
A mates son was playing his 100th on Sat so I went to Harry Trott. Collegians v DLS. Previously undefeated Collegians didnt fire a shot. As Ive said many times I couldve stopped Par Lap…
Backed it up with the East Brighton Vampires [I kid you not] on Sunday. Have followed them for previous two losses and really wanted to hear the theme song. They got up but the song lacked the expected references to Translvannia etc etc
Trying to get to the Caulfield Bears when they are at home too…

  3. My suggestions were ordinary…Oak Park flogged Douttas. Looks like Blackburn are the EFL measuring stick.
