Congratulations to Marnus Labuschagne on his Australian test debut. A first innings wicket adds emphasis to his contribution so far.
Labuschagne; hmm, it got me thinking about a team of Australian L’s. How does this sound ?
Bill Lawry (C)
Justin Langer
Darren Lehmann
Jack Lyons
Sam Loxton
Gil Langley (WK)
Ray Lindwall
Geoff Lawson
Dennis Lillee
Brett Lee
Nathan Lyon
The bowling is certainly potent, more than sufficient to knock over a side for less than the L’s can score.
To further reward Marnus Labuschagne, he can be 12th man for the Australian side from L.
Glen!
Glen! A good start to the day with this challenge. I suppose it would have been a bit too much to open with both Bill Lawry and Bruce ‘Stumpy’ Laird – perhaps 0/43 by lunch if they were in attacking frame of mind? Jack Lyons has me scampering. Middle order options might be Stuart Law (an utter travesty that he played only 1 Test) or Martin Love (he of the most immaculate cover drive).
Ta Ian.
I thought of all those chaps. In terms of WA openers, JL’s record reads better than Stumpy’s so i picked him.
Love/Law? Martin Love could merit a spot, his carer was pretty much curtailed by that dropped catch in the 4th test v the Windies when they chased down a record score. Stuart Law only got the one test. No Q’s on his ability just didn’t get the chances.
Jack Lyons was an Australian all rounder in the latte part of the 19th century.
Glen!
If they need a “Seckertry”, they could do worse than John Lill.
Nice one Glen ! Pretty sure Gil Langley played footy for Essendon.
FR Laver took 8/31 once in a test. Worth a mention.
The swashbuckling Trevor Laughlin a handy all-rounder.
Ta Phil.
Gil Langley played foot with Essendon during WW2. He was with the RAAF stationed in Melbourne.
FR Laver, one or two years before my time, but i’m cognisant of him. I’l do some more reading about his career.
Trevor Laughlin, Collingwood all rounder, i considered for inclusion. However he only played three tests. Jack Lyons and Sam Loxton had far better test careers.
Glen!
