Almanac Soccer: Quinn’s Cup and Trophy in the ACT

@hamishneal

Almanackers,

A brief story from the Kanga Cup youth football tournament played in the ACT last week.

The tournament, which is the largest of it’s kind in the Southern Hemisphere, saw 378 teams take part in the week-long tournament and it includes a range of local clubs, team from interstate and overseas. Victorian side Moreland Zebras won the U13 boys crown, there was an all-Korean match-up in the U12 boys final and (to be self-indulgent) two of my old junior clubs Emu Plains from Sydney’s west near Penrith and Canberra side Belsouth entered teams in the tournament.

One of the great yarns from the competition, and possibly the sports story of 2017, is goalkeeper Isabella Quinn of the Gold Coast Pirates winning the MVP award in the U18 girls category. Quinn is completely blind in her right and has only 35% vision in her left eye. Quinn, 18, even saved a penalty during the tournament. James Coman of the Canberra Times details the story, which outlines her meticulous preparation on game day plus what else she has done to assist her to save and help her team.

Enjoy and share.
