Almanac Poetry: Time, the toughest opponent of all

Confusion never stops

Closing walls and ticking clocks

The hours travelling to and from training

The years expended perfecting the skills

The months left in pre-season

The agonising wait for the undrafted nominee

The period left to get the big trade done

The weeks spent in rehab

The seasons left in a career

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time

Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines

The age between flags

The decades of disappointment

The years of false hope and near misses

The minutes before the opening bounce

The seconds to decide the next move

The moments remaining, one point the difference

The time left more or less than satisfactory
